my sister is headed to Florida this weekend and I wanted to have her grab some beer I can't get here (Midwest). Any seasonal or other recommendations that are out right now and available at most liquor stores? Haven't had much from FL, she's definitely grabbing some Jai Alai - loved that stuff last time we were down there. Just not a huge fan of fruit or sour beers. Thanks in advance - hope this is the right spot for the question!
Where in Florida, a lot of local only brewery's with no distribution. Proof in Tallahassee very good Coppertail's in Tampa good IPAs in bottles Cycle in St.Pete crowler fills 7th Sun in Dunedin growler fills, very limited bottles at the brewery Lot of new brewery's on the east coast that we don't see in Tampa area and not to familiar with Cheers and best of luck
Depends on where she will be. Make sure she checks the Jai Alai dates on the bottom of the cans. Way better fresh.
Knowing where your sister is going, as @Jge301985 and @ZMWTally have suggested, is critical in answering your question. The shortest answer is that just about ANY beer that she grabs that's made in Florida won't be available in the Midwest. But distribution of Florida beers even within Florida is lumpy.
Thanks for all the help, I appreciate it! They will be staying in Indian Shores, about 30 miles west of Tampa. Not sure how far I can talk her into running for me, might be stuck with whatever liquor/bottle shops are in the area.
7th Sun Brewery just to the north. Dunedin Fl. nice little town with two other brewerys , great Ice cream shop there as well. Not sure what bottle shops are in Indian Shores but any Publix Grocery will have Jai Alai.
If they're flying, Cigar City is nearly quite literally around the corner from the airport and it's also just off I-275, which they'd likely be on if they're driving down here. CCB has two coolers: one's usually filled with a bunch of sixers of their core beers and the other has larger-format bottles of seasonals and one-offs (full disclosure: I'm still drying out from Tampa Bay Beer Week and haven't been to CCB since last week so I don't know the current cooler-lineup situation). Check out this thread, which is the definitive guide to the Tampa Bay area. You'll be able to find Jai Alai in any Publix (our grocery chain) along with a couple of its other core beers. There are Total Wines and a couple of Leukens stores over that way (before you get out to the beaches). There are many, many options in the broad spectrum you've mentioned and Total Wine, for sure, sells a ton of singles. Your sister could go in, take photos of the shelves and you could real-time pick what looks interesting. My standard suggestion, beyond CCB stuff (Jai Alai, Invasion and Tampa-style Lager), is to see if they have Tampa Bay Brewing Reef Donkey, a terrific American pale ale.
Thanks for all the help guys! Hopefully she can bring me some good beer home. Excited to get back down there someday and have a few! I appreciate it mhorridge!
I'm going to piggyback on this forum. My wife and I just flew in from CO to visit family in Ft. Lauderdale for the weekend. Funky Budha, J. Wakefield, Riverside Market, and Laser Wolf are our go to stops, as well as trying to pickup some Inoculum Aleworks. Any suggestions for breweries in the area that are playing around with mixed fermentations, 100% Brett beers, or NE-style IPA? We are willing to drive in a ~3hr radius.
Civil society is an hour north of ft Lauderdale. They are making great IPA's, worth the trip, you can fill crowlers too.
Wow, between Fresh and Pulp, Civil Society looks like a must! Now let's talk sour and funk In the area...
best bet for sours in the area is J Wakefield in Miami or go to the Funky Buddha Lounge in Boca where they usually have a lot of berliners on tap that they never have at the brewery in Oakland Park
Sunshine City IPA by Green Bench is in 6 pack cans all over the place, and its my current local favorite IPA in distro. Also, Cigar City might still have White Oak Jai Alai in the cooler...if not, it may be in stores by now.
Thanks @jcb7472 , I'm definitely visiting the Boca Funky Buddha and J. Wakefield. I know both those breweries nail the Florida Weisse, I'm curious about the availability of more "funky" yeast dominated mixed-fermentations rather than the lacto-centric sours... Especially of the barrel-aged variety. I'm wondering if any brewery down in this area has taken this up as their niche.
