Anyone visit Societe this weekend? Are Apprentice and Pupil on tap? I heard Pupil might have run out last week.

    Thanks.

New batch of Pupil went on. IIRC, for IPAs they currently have Publican, Apprentice, and Pupil. BTW, their Untappd venue page is a good way to get an idea of what’s currently pouring.

Thanks for the beta. That was the first place I checked, but their untapped page hasn't been updated for over a week.

Oops. I checked Taphunter. I'll make a note of the Untapped page as well

I went to societe earlier today to get my growler filled with the pupil and they're out of 4 or 5 beers.

Last time I was there, they were out of 3: Roustabout, Pugilist, and Bachelor Mosaic. Please don't tell me the 4th is the Butcher. My work week sanity depends on it.

Looks like the Roustabout is on. This comes out twice year and is their double IPA. Get it if you can.

    Nice bump, dcgunman.

Reading the old comments on this raises two questions:

-- Do people still use Tap Hunter?
-- Has Societe released any new beers besides the Coachmen over the last, uh, year or so?
-- Seriously, what's the deal with the sours?

Oops, I guess that's three questions.

Roustabout is the one you really want to focus on. That beer is GOAT

Well, they're doing 2L fills of The Butcher now but it's really hard to get excited for Societe right now. Seems like they've been stagnant for a while.

Need to brew new flavor of the week IPAs, or else I move on to drinking worse IPAs.

Yea, not a whole lot going on with Societe of late. I mean not really any new beers to talk about. Haven't heard of their sour program. Or barrel aged stuff. The Pupil and their other ipa's are still good but as everyone is moving on they really haven't.

Even though they dont got much, give me Pupil and the Butcher in bottles and I think I'm set. If only they were closer to OC ..

I know that this is sarcasm, and I appreciate your point about the cult of the new and fetishizing the tick, but I think there's a real discussion to be had here - one of the main reasons I drink beer is because I'm not interested in having the same thing over and over again (my penchant for crushing grunion like all day, bro, notwithstanding), so I'm much less likely to make a special trip to visit Societe (since they don't bottle) to drink a whole bunch of beers I've already had than I am to go check out somewhere new to me, or at least somewhere with beers I haven't tried yet. Despite the fact that I know it won't be as good as what I would have at Societe.

Call me a ticker if you want, but I think it's a little nobler than that - I'm not trying to flex on people who haven't tried over 9,000 IPAs or masturbate to my unique:total check-in ratio on Untappd, I think it's about curiosity, and the things that drew me to craft beer in the first place. Which is not to say that Societe is bad or doing it wrong (they aren't - the beers are objectively good and they're doing it very well) or any of that, just that last time I was in SD I skipped them, and i will likely do it again.

TL;DR: Societe is good, but new beer is fun. Yes that means more for you. you should be thanking me 'cause I gave her right back to you.

I think a HUGE percentage of people who enter the craft world at whatever time go through this phase. It's almost mandatory. You wanna drink/taste as many things as you possibly can. I think those like me who got into beer when IG wasn't around, Twitter was barely in the works, and Facebook was not widely used, all we had was BA (or RB) to post our "ticks," but we had to do a review of it as well of like 100 characters... so it actually took some work/thought to tick, and was less pompous. Now with IG/FB/Twitter around I think there's some disdain for today's Ticker because it's annoying to watch the way people flaunt the pics of their beers and whatnot, lining up their 15 bottles of special release by their pool, etc. looking for words of praise from mostly strangers.. it's kind of weird..

All I know is that for me, after a few years I stopped ordering new stuff and kept drinking the stuff I knew would give me the best flavor/$. I wonder what percentage of people reach this enlightenment.

For me, when I first got into this craft thing it was about try everything that was available locally. I was trying everything as far as style. That was back in 2006/7. When I narrowed it down to IPA's and stouts I was then looking for anything in those styles. As far as IPA's it was mainly San Diego west coast IPA's (Ballast Point/Alpine/GF) and RRBC Elder and Pig. Noble just started here and they weren't good at all. Terrible. That changed after year one. Societe came on board and was a hit for me right away. I would stop in after my Alpine run. Of course LA/OC craft changed completely then. ESBC, BWBBQ&B, Smog would enter and continue to improve with each new IPA release. Societe kept brewing what they do best. Not really any new stuff coming from them since they opened. But the IPA's they do have I think are still worthy of a glass or two. Look at RRBC. They are still brewing the Elder and Pig and not really anything else as far as new IPA recipes. Of course you can't compare RRBC's IPA's to Societe. I haven't been stopping in Societe as much on my Alpine runs because I can get the Pupil or Apprentice, etc almost anytime just down the street form my place.

Boy, does "enlightenment" sound arrogant. LOL

I'd argue that not wanting to try anything new isn't enlightenment, either, and I seriously doubt that describes you.
