I attended the Quad State Beer Fest on Saturday and sampled a few beers from Cushwa Brewing Co., opening in Williamsport, MD (hopefully) later this year. Tried the berliner weisse and pale ale and thought they were pretty good. Definitely better than most entries at the beer fest and better than most recently opened breweries.

Has anyone else sampled their beers? Does anyone know the brewers background? From talking with them briefly they seem like great people. They'll definitely be a welcomed addition to the Hagerstown/Williamsport region.

Being from neighboring Frederick Co. this is exciting news. Hopefully they will be better than some of the pedestrian breweries that opened in our area in last year or so (I won't mention names, but 2 in Frederick Co and one in Montgomery county. Antietam Brewing at Benny's is always a nice stop in the area for food and a brew (now that Alway's Ron's closed :-(. Most of Antitam's beers are so/so, but I find Lil Ben's Milkstout about as good a low ABV milkstout as out on the market anywhere.

I'm still waiting for updates on Barnwerks (Thurmont location of brewery with farm in Walkersville). 33% there according to website. I'll keep expectations pretty low, based on new brewery trackrecord for the general central Maryland area. Manor Hill is still the one shining exception.

Mad Science brewing makes some exceptional beers, but the brewmaster/owner is still doing it on a pretty small scale still, unless you find their beer at a festival or local restaurant, the brewery hrs. are seasonal and only 11-4pm on weekends, so its been kinda hard to track their beers down.

It looks like they've received a lot of brewing equipment recently. I think that was one of the things holding them back from opening. Hopefully we'll be able to get in there soon.

I think they'll be opening on January 25th but their big celebration is on the weekend. Regardless, I plan on attending one of those dates. Really looking forward to it.

If you plan on attending the Cushwa celebration, you might as well round out your weekend and attend GearHouse's Grand Opening celebration on the 27th.

Cool! I talked to one of the employees and he said they were gonna open on that Weds., but when I saw the FB post, I thought I misunderstood. I'll have to look in to Gear House. I only live 5 miles from where Cushwa is opening!

Head brewer Garrett is a great dude. Believe his experience is mostly home brewing but he also helped at Four Quarters Brewing in Winooski. I believe the equipment delay was the hold up so it's nice to see them opening.

Looking forward to getting down there later this year from NYC. Maybe hit D.C. and Baltimore as well. I highly recommend a visit and if you see Garrett and Lindi in the tasting room, say hello. Very friendly peeps!

I went to the official opening today (Saturday). Complete $hitshow today with the crowd though. Had to stand outside in line for about 15 min. just to get in the door. If I had to break down the crowd demographics today, it seemed to be about 60% "wealthy 20 somethings/who looked like they belonged in a Virgina vineyard but got lost, 10% true beer geeks (like myself and my friend), and maybe another 30% just local random Hagerstown looking couples over age of 50. Strange mix.

The beers were decent, taproom is very nice layout and spacious, they do crowler cans to take home, talked to several of the owners/workers and they were all pleasant. Prices normal for area. Worth paying them a visit if your in the Hagerstown general area.

I saw the Instagram photos for Saturday's celebration. Had to stay away. Sunday was great though. Got a few seats at the bar and sampled most of their offering. Definitely worth a visit

You're better off not breaking down the crowd demographics. You come off more pretentious than the 'wealthy 20 somethings'. 'Beer geeks' are often stereotyped as overweight, poorly dressed, mouth-breathing neckbeards. I guess the real winners here are the 50+ local couples.

Nah, the winners were the owners. They cashed in on opening weekend.

Yeah, I agree. the taproom, beers and staff are all quality. Saturday was a mistake, but I had nothing better to do! :-)

I live less than 10 minutes from here, waiting for the opening weekend crowds to die down before I stop in to check it out.

Any updates from anyone who's been to Cushwa since opening weekend 3 weeks ago? Just wondering how they are settling in and quality of brews.

I have not been back since the opening weekend. I know they were having some supply issues early on and could only sell 4 oz samplers of select beers. But it looks like they already expanded into the location right next door. Seems like production should ramp up soon.

They have two new beers on tap and to go in crowlers this week so it seems they're making enough beer again
