My question is, if you buy a bottle of beer from a well known local bottle shop, lay it down in the backseat of your car, get home and find the beer leaked a 1/4 of its contents all over the backseat of your car. After further inspection you note the cap appears to have been defective and was cut wrong. If you bring the bottle back to the shop, should they replace it for you?
I would speak to the brewery first. It's their defect. They should replace it for you though the bottle shop, and then reimburse the bottle shop (if they couldn't mail a replacement to you straight from the brewery). That's how it works with prescription drug devices that fail anyway.
Stores buy from distributors who buy from the brewery. The first stop should be the store. It's their responsibility to go back to the distributors who go to the brewery.
Precisely. Take it to the store, show them what happened, they'll mark it as breakage/defective product, and send it up the chain. Things like infections are a little more hazy in the best way to handle, but a defective bottle that you JUST bought is clearly a case to handle with the store, and they should absolutely be willing to replace it.
Thank you for the replys. So I went to bottle shop and they reluctantly replaced it after looking and acting as though I was basically stealing from them. I don't know, I would have prolly preferred them to kindly refuse then the response I got
I am sure that @ModernTimesJacob would like to know about this too. If it is his equipment that needs to be adjusted/fixed it would be best to know right away before it costs him more money down the road.
Just throwing this out there, I was told a couple months ago by a fellow BAer who works for Total Wine Corporate, that it's extremely difficult to return alcohol. Doesn't mean it can't be done but state laws make it very difficult.
I returned 3/4 of a 4 pack of double jack to a bevmo because I didn't realize it was 8 months old (my bad for not looking before buying). They refunded the full amount no questions asked. Saw those 3 bottles sitting on the singles section for weeks after that.
California has specific rules in regards to returning alcohol. If there is a defect with the alcohol then you can return it with no issues. But returning alcohol due to over purchasing/"do not like" are prohibited.
I've returned beer to Whole Foods with no issue before. Admittedly, it's been about 4 years or so since I've done this.
Totalwine refunded me for a drain pour doggieclaws! I had a six pack of Northcoast Brewing Blue Star from Bevmo that tasted like shit(probably cause it sits in the warehouse and shelves for forever and a day), I had opened 2 bottles to make sure it was shit and they gave me a full refund.
I saw a guy once drop a Pliny in the parking lot (limit 1) and had the gall to go complain and then more or less force the beer guy to give him another one.
i had a pliny break once because the plastic bag it was in broke. happened another time with a Parabola. both times were heartbreaking. i feel like a situation like that it's kind of a grey area. i didn't ask for a refund, but probably could have made an argument. if anything, the lesson i took away is: never ever trust your bags - paper or plastic. always hold from the bottom, like the beer is your baby, which it is
