In addition to the good advice here, I'd recommend seeking out specific stuff from Matuska. Really enjoyed most of their beers I've had.

    Some other thoughts:
-Go to one of the many places serving from the tank and enjoy the fesh urquell
-Letna beer garden is a nice change of pace too and has great views, if the weather permits
-Find a nice bottle shop (beergeek, Pivni Galerie, Zly Casy) and go sit on Petrin Hill and enjoy the amazing view

    Enjoy your trip.

Results of my trip to Prague last fall at www.BeerGuidePRG.com -- as I've always visited in cooler (or cold) weather it is lacking on warm weather places...

Echo the recommendation of Pivni Flosof

Sadly, I seem to have developed a hypersensitivity to diacetyl in past couple of years -- I find it hard to drink more than one glass of PU :slight_frown:

    Luckily no issues with Únětické!

Do you notice any difference in the diacetyl levels of PU between the beers that we get here in he US vs. the PU in the Czech Republic?

    Cheers!

It is hard to say because I never really drink it anymore.

I first noticed it last summer when I had one at a Taco Mac while visiting my brother in Atlanta. Truly, my first reaction was "Who melted a stick of butter in my beer!" Fast forward to October and I was in Prague with a group of friends. First stop was Lokál - Dlouhá (tankovna) and it was a butter bomb to me as well. The others in the group didn't find it objectionable -- though it was noticable to them. The only place where I found I actually could drink a second one was at Jelínkova Plzeňská Pivnice -- but the place was too smokey. Multiple people told me they have the freshest PU in Prague and I believe they are kegs, not tankovna.

I talked with an ex-pat friend who lives in Prague. He mentioned that a couple years ago he spent 2-3 months back in the States. When he returned to Prague he found the beers incredibly buttery. But after a month or so things were back to normal.

In March I was in Stockholm and there are now a few tankovna pubs and I had one. I could finish it, but I didn't want a second.

Didn't give the many tankovna pubs in Berlin a second looks when I was there a couple weeks ago -- too much other beer to drink

Please don't get me wrong -- I am not ragging on PU. I've drunk it with people whose palates I trust and they find it noticeable but not objectionable. And that is pretty much the way I would have described it on my previous trip to Prague 5 or 6 years ago. My sensitivity has changed.

It sounds like your friend got used to drinking beers with no perceptible diacetyl during his stay in the States and had to get re-used to perceptible diacetyl upon his return to the Czech Republic.

I am typically a non-fan of perceptible diacetyl in beer but for some reason the level of diacetyl in PU does not bother me.

    Cheers!

Being from the states the Pilsner are fairly light beers. Krosovice and Gambrinus are nice and I do drink Pilsner Urquil but that is so common I try the smaller beers if possible.

Dacetyl - wonderful word just your average beer drinker!

Went to Prague about this time in 2014. We went to 3 beer related places. U kroka, Pivovarsky dum, and Klasterni Pivovar. U kroka has great traditional Czech food. Beer is mostly PU and Kozel but very fresh. Pivovarsky dum food was good, beer menu was more diverse, quality was OK. Klasterni Pivovar has good views, great food and beer. At the time they had an IPA which was scarce there.

I'd like to piggyback on this thread and ask a similar but different question:

My g/f will be in Prague in a week (after the OP, unfortunately). She doesn't drink beer. However, she may be able to pick up a few bottles of something fresh to bring back for me.

What is the one bottled/canned beer from the Czech Republic I must try?

Depends on what you like and enjoy usually.
Thing is, most classic czech beers are meant to be drunk as session beers in larger quantites, with one bottle I personally would be unhappy:wink:
So I'd personally suggest something a bit stronger, atypical. So I'D say Pradubicky Porter, Bernard Černý Ležák, or if she makes it to a decent bottle shop with a wider selection, something like Záviš...but again, depends on what you like or want to try and where she gets to, there are decent bottle shops in the city.
