Well after 150+ packages with Fed-Ex I got hit with a damaged shipment. I couldn't have asked for a better result though. My box was repackaged and sent back to me. Came in a completely new box with FRAGILE stickers on it, and when opened there was a big orange bag tied off with bottles inside. When I opened the bag 2 of the 3 bottles I sent were in there. They were wrapped in the original bubble wrap, and slightly wet and sticky. Out of the three bottles I sent, the bottle that broke was the "best" possible bottle to have broken and the rarer more desirable bottles were the ones left unscathed. Pretty lucky all around.

The shitty thing is that this was a surprise box to a past partner that hooked me up with last years Bourbco "Easter Egg" variants as a surprise. I was looking forward to catching him off guard for the holidays. He was notified about the delay and we have communicated about it. Welp @sblickem it's back on it's way minus a bottle.

I'm curious though, should I file a claim? I know I have $100 insurance, would they even question something under that amount? Broken bottle of barrel aged balsamic vinegar $40. Sounds worth a shot. Or do I thank the beer gods and move on?

Just say you sent a birthday present. I doubt they would question it even if it's for the full $100, especially this time of year. The folks handling those claims probably have bigger problems to deal with.

My gut says you were pretty lucky with how the situation played out and to probably leave it at that. Filing a claim just brings unnecessary interaction with FedEx in a situation where you violated their terms of use so at this point so I'd probably leave it be.

This is the flip side of the coin. I don't know how much attention creating a claim would bring, but @KevinJohnson2 is correct that it did work out pretty well considering you got two of the bottles back in a repackaged box. I imagine that's exceedingly rare (like, way more uncommon than BCBS '15 Rare). If you think my earlier comment sounds like bad advice then I think you have your answer.

I’m also guessing that FedEx may have logged it as broken beer, so that if you file a claim they know to reject it.

Up to you, worst they can do is deny it.

Anyone know if they still send the corporate letter out slapping your wrist for sending alcohol? I got one of those years ago.

Yes it came via USPS a few weeks after I received the broken box back.

I would just let it be. I sent a large box out a couple of years ago, forget to who, and it was out for delivery and then they said it was damaged.

I called and tried to get answers on when it would be returned and I was told it would not be returned. I violated the TOS and the package was going to be destroyed. I was pissed to say the least! I had sent glassware and other breweriana.

So I packed up another box and sent it without pushing the issue.
