Hi guys, yesterday was racking from my fermentor tap 5 gals of dry-stout to secondary to add oak cheaps .Everything went fine until half secondary was filled, I started to hear a fizzing noise coming from the joint of the hose with the tap and immeasurable tiny bubbles running through the hose side. The result was a big foam on the top of secondary that started to flood by its sides. At first time I stupidly thought they were co2 bubbles but then I saw the enourmous foam and realized I was fried, they were co2 + oxygen.I let it go until all beer was transferred though. Do I have any chance avoiding staling on this beer?
Well to quote the great philosopher Genghis Khan "It is what it is!" Sorry to hear of your troubles but I suggest carbing and consuming quickly. Good luck!
Practical Approach: If you have pressurized CO2 I would attempt to purge the headspace. You may not evacuate all the oxygen but a liberal dose of carbon dioxide may help. Holistic Approach: I see you have exactly 400 karma points . . . this is known to bring bad luck. I would petition the Mods for 5 sympathetic points to get rid of those cursed double zeros. (@jbakajust1 , if those points are rationed out you can take from my total)
Maybe you have right with those zeros. I am having troubles in regards homebrewing very often, last time I brewed my motored-mill fell from a table , crashed to floor and 11 # uncrushed pilsen malt went all over the place. Fortunately the motored-mill didn´t break so I could brew anyway.lol
I did that recently. Only I was at the Tavern/Home Brew Supply. They were not impressed. But hey, I cleaned it up. On topic, sometimes it happens and no it's not good. But its not the end of the world either. Clamp the hose securely. Cheers.
Sorry about your accident @Tebuken but at least you'll have something drinkable. Would you consider reporting back occasionally as your drink your way through this beer to give a progress report on the taste? We can all learn from this incident through your follow-up comments and make something good out of it. I'm mostly curious about how long it will take before any off flavor causes you to reach your limit.
Well , as Mothergoose03 asked me, I am reporting back what`s going on with my accidental Dry Stout.I have kegged and carbed it today (just 2.1 vol) ,let it rest a few hours . Now I am drinking it(48 hs after racking) and I can fairly say it is very good. It is very dark with a nice amber foam very dense that lingers average time. It has a very nice flavor , upfront comes a malty sweet and roasted character(no coffe),very smooth, giving way to a moderate bitter end. Medium body. Very enjoyable , who knows , I don`t give up my hopes. I will report again in a few days. Whish me good luck.
Reporting back again, 3 days later from the last report I must say beer has lost part of its freshness. I took a couple of pints last night and found the upfront coming malty sweet and roasted character has turned into a strong roasted character, kinda pungent ,less smooth but still very good beer. No traces of staling so far, maybe sitting at 40 F helps to ****** the process.
