Damon shouldn't be too hard to acquire but it sounds like it may be getting that way now...

I agree, all you need to do is fly into a regional airport and then do a 4 hour round trip drive.
or drive 4 hours each way from Boston
or drive 6 hours each way from NYC

    very easy!

Exactly! Like a 4 hour round trip from Oakland to Santa Cruz (SARA), or 4 hours round trip from San Jose to Santa Rosa (RR), or flying in from anywhere in the country to Munster, IN (DLD)... Easy!

    Everyone pays the hardship tax.

Not sure if people really say it's hard to get to. But for a lot of them, it's really far. People in Burlington are not the ones complaining about distance. Traders from Boston (7 hours), NYC (12 hours) and PA (16 hours + in some cases) sometimes are. It's just a statement of fact for them. Should it add to the trade value of their beer, whether dollar value or trade value, not at all. Does it change their mindset when trading it, maybe. If you find the right trader, their stuff is not that hard to get. Even though I go to many of their releases, I regularly trade for more HF and I've always gotten a fair deal.

I've had people tell me the drive is difficult (not just long), which was pretty amusing when I actually did it. I'm sure it's rougher in the winter, but again, it falls under the "hardship tax" argument for me.

I've received the growlers for fair trades and have tried to reciprocate with extras that acknowledge the length of the drive, but the arguments used to hype up bottle trade value can be a little amusing to read. Imagine if I trotted out the 4-hour drive I made last night to get FfaC as a reason to ask for whales...

Put it this way: the # of people living within a 1 hour drive of SARA is probably...10x the # of people living within an hour of HF? That's just a guess but I would bet it's something close to that.

This is what you hear so many people talking about how hard HF is it to get to. It's in a very isolated rural area and there simply aren't many people living around there. so a huge % of the people there have traveled far to get there. people travel to SARA or RR but there are a ton of locals as well.

I mean Santa Cruz itself is bigger than Burlington!!! ditto for Santa Rosa. and Burlington is still far from HF. and Munster is a half hour from Chicago!

My comment was specifically about people who talk about how "hard" the drive is. It's a little long. It's not "hard."

And considering most of the traders from the Bay Area have to make a significant drive to RR or SARA, I would bet the median drive to either HF or those places (as far as traders go) is pretty comparable. Although it does seem like MontereyBay831 buys half the SARA bottles and pimps them in the trading forum, there are others who come from farther away.

well, "hard" vs. "long" is kind of semantics.

Re: the median drives, there is no way it's even close. each way according to Google Maps:

Union Square to SARA: 1 hour, 25 minutes
San Jose to SARA: 45 minutes

Those are 2 major metro areas. The closest major metro area to HF is Boston, and that's 3.5 hours from HF. The closest city to HF is Montpelier, with a population of 8,000!

Montreal is only 2.5 hours but there are border and custom issues to deal with. That can add an hour to the trip each way.

City folk ain't used to dirt roads dude.

On the distance travelled aspect, like Vonnegut said above, it has more to do with the psychological impact of the effort involved. It doesn't impact the $4$ or trade value much, but might impact the desire to trade the beers at all (which creates a bit more scarcity and in the end make the bottles harder to trade for).

Believe me, I get that, and I use the same reasoning for my own long trips.

true, but depending on which way you go you're only on dirt roads for maybe 2 miles...

I just wanted to comment on this:

Considering the whole state of VT has 625,000 people, it is safe to say more people live within 1hr of SARA than the entire popluation of VT.

To the OP, you're not off you just need to find the right person.

I'm not going to argue about how hard the trip is but just because you made one trip on a lovely sunny day in the summer and found it easy that doesn't really mean anything.
