New Glarus Dancing Man Wheat, their highly acclaimed hefeweizen, has been removed from their seasonal list and put in a list called "beers we have known and loved". Looks retired to me. Anyone know anything about this?

I wouldn't put any stock in that line of reasoning -- after all, there are only three beers in the "seasonal" category, and all are currently in production.

Then again, there's nothing like a coffee stout on a hot summer day....

ETA -- Pavlov's dog ain't got nothing on me when I look at this list....

Then it must also be the end of Totally Naked, Staghorn Octoberfest, Laughing Fox and every other seasonal that they've released the past several years. Time to start more threads! :stuck_out_tongue:

Since New Glarus moved to the limited Beer Calendar (i.e. only beers currently or previously available in the current calendar year), anything that is not on the current Beer Calendar appears to be retired.

I wouldn't worry. Dancing Man will most likely return in the Summer time frame, assuming it amassed enough vote this past year and/or it is the right business decision to continue to offer it.

I don't get the love for this beer unless you really like clove. I had a bottle on Christmas, and I ended up drain pouring it. Clove to me is a spice reserved for pumpkin pie and nothing more.

The vast majority of people rating beers on BA and RB believe that it is an excellent German Hefeweizen (#3 on BA, and #1 on RB). It would appear your tastes are different than theirs.

This makes sense, sorry for the scare. I definitely saw Dancing Man on that list not long ago but that must have been before they updated the list for 2013.

You must just not like the style. The yeast used to brew Hefe's produces, among other things, a clove flavor.

I wholeheartedly agree. The clove is dominating and dreadful. Took this camping one summer and after a few sips poured it into the dirt. Then again, I'm not a big fan of Hefe's in general, but I like this one even less than many of the German brewed Hefe's I've tried.

does anything really get retired at new glarus? For Christ sakes, the so-called "retired" list includes fat squirrel. But if it is really retired, just wait a year or two. 2016 - the year of iced barleywine and god willing 2017 - the year of old english porter (my personal favorite).

Per this thread http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/new-glarus-beer-schedule-update.44363/ Fat Squirrel won't be brewed this year.

For New Glarus's Year Round Offerings and Seasonals, they brew what does well in their Annual Beer Vote intersected with what has been selling well. I suspect Fat Squirrel was selling ok, but not great. And it probably didn't fare too well in the beer vote, as it is a good nut brown ale but nothing too spectacular.

As for the Thumbprint series, per Deb, that is fully in Dan's control, although I suspect he looks at the beer vote for some inspiration.

Absence makes the hear grow fonder. Take it away for a year, and I would guess is will sell much better in 2014 than it did in 2012.

Not trying to get into an argument here, but the post said that it wouldn't return until at least 2014. The post didn't say it was for sure going to return in 2014, just that the earliest it would possibly be brewed again was 2014. There's no guarantee that it will return in 2014, unless the Carey's think it will some how start selling better.

Either way, you're right that both of those beers won't be brewed this year.

So you drank a 4-6 month old hefe & didn't like it? Huh. Maybe you did it wrong.

Or maybe you're not familiar with hefes?

"A south German style of wheat beer (weissbier) made with a typical ratio of 50:50, or even higher, wheat. A yeast that produces a unique phenolic flavors of banana and cloves with an often dry and tart edge, some spiciness, bubblegum or notes of apples."

Either way, any year with Dancing Man would be a sad year. The only hefe I've ever bought in bulk.

Oh for shame on me for drinking a beer maybe past its prime and not liking it. Please keep the sarcastic beer snobbery to yourself.

Yes, I understand the yeast tasting like cloves. This beer though is not light on the clove flavor, and I just don't see the desire for a beer to focus on the flavor. If people out there really like the style more power to them, but I think they're weird because clove is a monster of a spice on its own.
