Kind of begs the question: who drank the cat pee? I've never heard that as a flavor description for beer. I'm totally gonna use it in all of my reviews now. Hmm, I detect a little caramel, some pine and floral notes, and what's that?! Oh my, a nice underbelly of cat pee rounds out the flavors nicely.

I think people get a little trigger-happy in utilizing taste descriptors that they have read in other reviews, and end up using them wrong.

"Dank" has nothing to do with onions, garlic, or cat pee - these are all unique descriptors unto themselves. "Dank" references only one thing: the dankness of the danks. The lambs bread. The healin of the nation. If your palate can't identify with this, then you must have missed out in high school.

It refers to the aroma of a high quality, fresh bag of weed, which isn't the same as second hand smoke. Think of it as a skunky pine aroma. That's dank.

Some people also consider cat pee, onion and garlic hop aroma to be dank. I don't. I consider them to be cat pee, onion and garlic. The cat pee aroma bothers me. Onion and garlic don't bother me. Sometimes they are mixed with skunky pine hops which makes the overall aroma a weird brand of dank.

Truth. To me it's more that moist, sticky chlorophyllic scent. It almost smells like a dirt-floor basement with an open bottle of Pinesol hidden somewhere. Or rotting ferns? I don't know...

The updated recipe of Gubna though brought me back to licking my fingers after breaking up a couple nugs of KB.

When it's around, Avery's DuganA has always given me that whole "dank" thing.

It's funny how different everyone interprets the tastes and aromas because I get the cat pee and dank aroma from Simcoe(which I discovered from Weyerbacher's Double Sim). I also homebrew and have done a beer entirely hopped with Columbus and I get more citrus/grapefruit and maybe a hint of dank.

Yes, every individual has their own unique palate.

Below is something I posted previously concerning cat pee vs. pine wrt Simcoe:

“It seems that you might have an ‘issue’ with perceiving the compound 4MMP? You might be interested to know that women (most women?) have a tendency to perceive 4MMP as cat pee.

Below is a quote of a hopfenunmaltz post:

“Catty comes from a compound called 4MMP, men get pine out of it, women get cat piss. I always ask the wife to smell a piney beer, and she says cat pee. Simcoe and Citra are known to have it.”

    Cheers!

Do a 2oz. flame out addition and dry hop with 4oz. of Nelson, if you want to smell cat pee. The cat pee from Citra fades, fortunately. Nelson seems to linger for quite a while.

I recall the first all Citra brew I made. I used a lot of it. When I opened the fermenter after 2 weeks, it was very strong cat pee. I almost hurled. It vanished after one month in bottles and it was a good beer.

I get a combo of pine and cat from simcoe and citra, and a lot of cat pee from certain Sauvignon Blanc wines and I'm a dude.

In general, women have a much better sense of smell than men. However, there are men who have a very good sense of smell. You are probably one of them.

Yup, I really appreciate the mods stuffing this discussion into a thread that wasn't exactly the same as mine. But whatever...

    Alpine - Nelson
Green Flash - West Coast IPA
    Russian River - Row 2 Hill 56
    RR - Pliny

Do you know when it was reformulated? I usually check the cans for dates because I have gotten some really old OB's that sat on the shelf before.

I don't know when exactly, but the cans I had were from February and definitely less oniony. Chances are any you find from 2013 will be the new version.
