I have difficulty with "dank" too. Honestly SLASM to me smells like over boiled asparagus.

Well there's good dank IPAs and bad ones, good tropical style IPAs and bad. I prefer lighter fruity IPAs myself, but a great IPA thst is dank is still a great beer, badly done is just badly done. I think Lawsons Chinookered is a great beer as an example.

Blazing World by Modern Times. It's actually a hoppy red/red IPA, but it is definitely dank as heck!

I would say anything with Simcoe.

Dank has two meanings to me, pot/skunk or mossy/musty. (Wife says I use the term a lot musing to myself about flavor and aroma). I get the mossy type of dank from Trillium Mettle and Tree House Doppelganger, and many beers done with big Mosaic dry hopping. The pot like dank I get from more west coast styled beers, particularly with Chinook and Simcoe. Crazy Mountain Emotional Rescue I recall as being very dank and pretty tasty.

Personally I prefer the mossy dank the most, and coincidentally get a lot of cantaloupe like flavors in those as well, which is one of my favorite flavors in an IPA.

Beers with Columbus (CTZ) are the most dank for me. Mosaic is too white wine like. Nationally I haven't found too many that are nice and dank - Lagunitas Maximus is one, would love to find more. Locally Barrier's Dunegrass is totally dank. Love that one but don't see it often.

I also like piney West Coast types, do not like fruity, juice like NE style at all. Unfortunately for those of us that like dank and pine, the trend is going in a totally opposite direction towards the soft juicy styles.

Man, I have to give props to you for dissecting the flavors of hops as well as you do! I feel that your home brewing background helps a lot with that.
I absolutely agree on the "dankness" factor of Doppleganger and even some Bissell brews! Personally I do favor them over west coast styles too, maybe because I'm exposed to more New England dank beers, obviously! :grinning:

Isn't Waldo's a triple IPA at 10-12%? It's super weedy because that was the intent in making the beer. Released every year on 4/20. Will probably skip the bottles though, since I didn't enjoy that as much.

I know it isn't a DIPA but Bissell Brother's Substance is pretty much a weed bomb.

Westbrook and evil twin had a collab draft only IPA "erase and rewind" and I swear it was liquid nugs. Tasted like a nice dab. So much cannabis like terpenoids.
Ever since that other "dank" IPAs don't seem so dank to me anymore.

IMO, the state of New Mexico and Albuquerque in particular are masters of this type of IPA. Bosque, La Cumbre, Canteen, Blue Corn, Chama River, Marble, Boxing Bear, etc.
It isn't necessarily my thing, but I have to respect what they're doing down there.

The craziest one I can recall was a collaboration effort called Radioactive. It tasted great, but I could only handle about 4oz of it. It felt like it was coating my teeth in resin.

    Fresh? Or aged?

Aged is a giant caramel barleywine for sure. One or two years old.
