I got a bottle of the 17 Chem last year and had 18 on tap a few times this year and I thought the 18 completely destroyed the 17. Something about the rye barrel just did this beer everything right.

Has anyone tried lounge yet? I have a bottle and am trying to decide if I want to trade it or not.

No one has opened one because everyone is waiting for someone else to open one and give reviews....Be a pioneer and crack it open to let the community know if it is good so they can determine how much they can sell theirs for...

It is excellent cuvée ‘d with Turtledogg - it was the basis for the double barrel 2019 variant, per the DLD2019 thread.

What % of attendees go strictly to flip bottles? 10%?

One of my friends got a bottle of that in 2012. We drank it relatively fresh, and thought it was decent but the peppers were definitely in your face. I don’t see it being at its prime over 5 years later.

I've heard they've toned down the peppers in Muerte to a manageable level in more recent vintages. can anyone confirm?

Hoping to open a 2017 soon, so I'll report back. But oddly enough there were two 2016 Muertes at the BA table under the big tent, and they were shockingly similar to the red wax Cognac Muerte if I'm being honest.

Also I will add, there’s a reason why we never chose a Muerte again back when the Variants weren’t at random. I’m probably going to pick any Variant over Muerte every year. But it was interesting to try once.

No idea. I just enjoy watching the auctions. Handjee just hit $525.

I opened a Congac Muerte at DLD 2015 and it was amazing IMO.

I had a Muerte on draft at DLD last year and thought it was very tasty, not too spicy, but the peppers helps balance the sweetness of Dark Lord, very good variant. If you hate peppers though, you won't like it of course.

Looking at all those untappd checkins with full bottles and 5's across the board makes me suspicious of all the Sunday morning Lounge Against the Macromachine checkins and sudden ISOs with high value beers offered before Lounge even had a perceived secondary value. It felt like market manipulation. It wasn't on tap at Dark Lord Day and no one's opening bottles to prove those early checkins wrong. Just feels sloppy.

I thought 16 and 17 were much more toned down than say 13 or 15.

gottsta protect that trade value and get that HJ they've always dreamt about.

toned down in a good way or bad way?

In a good way. It wasn't as vegetal or hot. Think Abraxas sans cinnamon, or a little less spicy than when Goose Island has randalled BCBS through Serranos

I don't know guess there's a lot of variation with these but to me it tasted like pureed peppers and chilies and little else. And I like spicy shit, it wasn't the spiciness that got me, just tasted like a full plate of dinner in New Mexico.

    ^This, but unironically

I need to know what I want to do with my bottle. It sounds great, but that Tequila barrel is scary to me. Drank a FVM 17, don't want to be a victim to another variant that sounds good and is ruined by a bad barrel choice.
