Got group E and since it's my first Dark Lord I'm happy with any variant.

You guys are too serious with this variant crap. Gonna whine and pout all day if you don't get what you want

I'm just thrilled to get to go witness the shitshow. Excited to try a few new brews and meet some great people. I'd be lying if I said I didn't care what variant I get. Cause I do. I just don't want some wierd combo. Like a variant with chilies and cinninmon I'd take over a vanilla.

Def won't be tolerating any line cutting as expirenced enough of that crap. Figured as long as the other person throws the first punch, I'm in the clear:wink:....

Really looking forward to meeting some awesome people and enjoy this great event

Whining and pouting is part of DLD tradition. No matter how things go there will be posts complaining after DLD. Hell I've been known to whine myself.

Whining and pouting is a tradition for beer nerds, period. Hell, nerds in general do this crap all over the internet, whether it be because their favorite team made a bad trade/draft choice/etc., a videogame got delayed/bad reviews/cancelled, etc. etc. etc.

People just whine. Complaining about it on a (as of now) 31 page topic about a one-day festival is probably missing the point.

Complaining is just a way of life for some people. I think of it this way, beer is my hobby, if I start bitching and complaining about it, then its time to reevaluated my hobby.

Yeah, I kinda got to that point when I realized how much effort I was putting into chasing down beers. It's a much more enjoyable hobby when you spent less time running around (although the chase is fun to a certain extent, obviously), and more time trying new and potentially local beers.

Yea don't get me wrong I love to hunt down some shit but I'm not gonna come home and tell my friends DLD was a big bummer because I didn't get Vanilla

It'll go more like "bro DLD is sick.. so many good taps, bottles, I got four bottles AND this variant. You definitely gotta go"

Also if anyone needs a room.. I booked at Red Roof Inn last night which is technically in Lansing, IL.. but its basically Hammond. Its six miles from Floyds. Booked a two bed room for $60 a night through priceline so cheap rooms are to be had

This. I sort of got sucked into chasing whalez, but quickly decided it was not worth it financially. There are tons of fantastic beers out there at sane prices and reasonable availability. I still jump from my desk and get to the store when darkness comes out and grab a couple bottles if I can, I'll get up on black friday and snag some BCBS, etc., but I won't trade a trunkload of great beer for an SR-71 or BA "Unobtanium". I'm shocked at what I've seen offered for Assassin and SR-71. I'd love to try those beers, but I won't trade my first born male child for one (well, maybe I will....I'll throw in a used F-150 if you'll take him off my hands LOL).

DLD for me (my first this year) is first and foremost about having fun with my friends and enjoying some great beers. I'll hit the tap lines and take what I get. If I luck into a whale, great, if not, I'm sure there'll be some excellent beers on tap. Second is 4 bottles of DL, third is the variant. If they were doing scratch offs, I wouldn't be broken hearted if I didn't "win" one and, in some respects, at $50/bottle I'd be almost relieved. This year I'm paying for it no matter what, so I'd prefer to get one that I can enjoy. If I don't, I at least hope I can trade for something I would enjoy.

If this makes me a whiner, so be it. I'm totally pumped for DLD and enjoying reading/posting about it.

Bring some popcorn and enjoy all the drug transactions and prostitution going on!! :astonished:

Regardless, met a couple groups of people also going to DL and ended up having a great bottle share that night.

Nah, I think that's totally fair, and I really don't see a big deal with minor "whining" on these threads; it's cathartic, and it's something that usually more than one person takes part in. I think it's only an issue when it spills over into 1) arguments, naming calling, needlessly negative posts in general and 2) real-world negativity (an example would be when people were complaining on Twitter about a Binny's BA Pipeworks release).

In terms of DLD this year, I think it's totally reasonable to be disappointed if you can't get any variant you want, but I think it's also fair to air out your barrel-aged grievances (I'd ask for free bottles from whatever brewery tries to make this beer, but it looks like there's already a BA "Grievance," so that's not likely) in a respectful manner. I'll be disappointed if I get a variant I don't like, but I'm also going to DLD for the whole package, not one damn beer.

Regardless of whether it has vanilla in it.

    here's a zany thought....

what if Floyd Floyd Floyd's made, say, 300 bottles of BVDL and divided them equally among each of the groups? So Group A gets 50 bottles or whatever. Group B...another 50. And so on and so forth.

Just sayin'...it's a crazy enough idea that they could easily do. But I'm sure people would still find cause to complain even if it was divided.

Whatever. My friend and I are Group A. I'm excited. It'll be an awesome day. We're gonna get all the Vanilla Dark Lords.

Actually, Une Annee makes a Russian imperial called Airing of Grievances. Not sure if they barrel age it yet...

What did you folks think of the cherry cocoa BADL from last year? There's been much talk about vanilla DL and a few mentions of Coffee Cognac DL on this thread...but I haven't seen anyone mention the cherry variant from last year. I believe it was the most limited variant last year, curious where everyone that's tried it thinks it stacks up.

Frankly, I would love a maple variant, myself, but it would have to either have coffee or some type of pepper to cut out what would be higher-than-Prop '15 levels of sweetness.
