I've had the opportunity over the years to try most vintages of Dark Lord. While I understand and agree that they vary from year to year, some being less desirable than others, I've never had one that I would call "bad". Well, last night I opened a '13, (orange wax), for the first time and had to dump it. It was a sugar water mess with very off-putting flavors. Nothing like other vintages I have had.

Is '13 bad in general? Do you think it aged poorly? Perhaps bad bottle? I have a temp-controlled, dark cellar so proper storage is not an issue. Anxious to hear other experiences. Thanks & Happy New Year.

I would be interested to know if the was plays a factor here. I like the way wax looks, but it's a pain to remove most times and there are quality issues as well (ie Prairie Bomb!).

I have only had 2014, and it was delicious, so no help from me OP.

2013 was only slightly better than 2012, but those two were definitely the worst ones, all the other vintages I've tried, 2005-2014 have been fairly decent

DL has been gowing downhill since the first few years it was brewed - IMO.

That said, a drain pour would indicate something was definitely wrong w the bottle or your tongue.

I cracked a '13 back in April and thought it was delicious, and that was pretty much the consensus amongst everyone else partaking.

I'll go out on a limb and say my palate is pretty good after 20+ yrs of craft beer experience. I guess my brain could be pickled tho.
