Hopefully you learned not to pre judge beers.

i had a bad experience with pink peppercorns before.. I've never had a bad experience with beer.. judge peppercorns - not beer.

Wow..... Just now looking at this thrread for the first time since Friday. What a Dark Lord Day.... Extremely well ran....Amazing weather, and great people. This year was easily the best and smoothest one yet.

Great seeing you... I vaguely remember our meeting LOL. I tried to call out all the DA shirts and share pours with you guys. Wow.... Still recovering this morning.... Stayed start to finish again this year, and I am feeling it.

Me too. 2016 is a little sweet for my liking. Might have to sit a few years, IMO.

that's really not the point....although I didn't have anyone complain and it seemed everyone that tried it loved it. Super jammy. The point is that it was weird to me to be declined a pour of a beer. In my experience whenever anyone asks me for a pour of something I'll never decline anyone and I've never experienced what I did on saturday. It was just weird....different.

also....when did DLD become just a stout festival? I mean I get that it's centered around Dark Lord but in my 6 years of going it's never been about just stouts....to me it's a festival to celebrate and share awesome beers and a variety of styles.

Can we talk about how stupid the Indiana law that made FFF rope off the ENTIRE area in front of the stage? Seriously what the fuck is that all about?

Acquiring a '13 DL this week, suddenly the '14 & '15 vintage I got stuck with because I was too over eager to grab a bag has now become a 5 year vertical, silver lining.

(Time to unwatch this thread so I can accomplish stuff at work :grinning:)

If this is a "Stout Fest" should we skip bring IPAs too? Give me a break. My group had a few Side Project bottles that people were practically fighting for pours of.

Other than the variant issue, which presented a problem for many, what was wrong with this year's DLD?

I, for one, have trouble identifying anything, other than I wish the release from the holding pen would have been quicker. Food, taps, and porta-potties very accessible. Loved that they tweeted out locations of variants being tapped.

Already looking for the Dark Lord Day 2018 thread.

Right on man. But please for work's sake, can we wait until 2018 actual before creating it lmao!

Actually, I can find something--the only thing that's wrong with this year is that fate will never allow it be topped again.

    Or will it?

Seriously, not sure the stars can align quite as well as they did this year...especially speaking personally, but saw very few people not absolutely thrilled with how it went.

Personally I think sours are awesome to have around for a stout tasting. Really cuts through the heaviness of stouts and refreshes the palet. Just my opinion of course.

    There was a stage?! :flushed:

You're right on man - the sours, saisons and IPA's are necessary for me to have a change of pace. I also can't believe someone would deny you a pour, even if it was Assassin. I was pouring my bottles to folks with no expectations of anything in return a lot of the time.

The only thing I would've liked different for me this year is to check out the taps. I told myself I'd do that this year, and I never once even looked at what was on tap (or at least I don't remember doing it). There was just so much great beer being shared that it was tough to stop drinking that stuff.

Hats of to FFF for another great fest. Would I attend if nothing changed, sure. Can they improve? Yes, always lessons can be learned.

    What went well:
1- entry line was long, but went fast
2-weather made the day (though I would have been perfectly happy in another DLD Nor'easter)_
    3-Food lines went quick
4- Random variants is the fairest way to distribute so it isn't dependent on when you get in line.

    What can the improve on:
1-They have to have enough variants bottles for everyone next year. Make 2,000 extra and keep them in reserve for the subsequent year in case a batch doesn't turn out. You can always send them off to Warpigs for a fest there if you have left overs

2-Guest taps were very underwhelming, but maybe that is just because what people share is so much more interesting.

3-Next year they have to go to a punch card system for on draft variants AND have enough for people to try one or two. I missed out on a bunch as they ran out while I was in line. I finally decided to camp near the entrance to a draft tent for when another came on and got a pour of CTX. Literally no one was in the line for the regular items, everyone was waiting for the next variant to come on draft and the FFF staff was getting pissed. "It's going to be a while before we put the next one on." People are there to try the stuff they can't get at the brewpub everyday. FFF needs to recognize this and have more one-offs in plentiful supplies and make sure everyone gets to try at least on variant pour during the day. Moving to a limited punch card for variants and having enough supply on draft would allow them to get rid of the line camping. This to me is the biggest thing they need to fix for next year.

4- I Don't remember hearing any music during the day....Kind of weird, perhaps the stages were too far away? I miss the pounding metal for ambiance, even though it isn't my thing.

5-Wasn't a fan of this years Dark Lord. It seemed way thinner and the flavors didn't meld as well. I'm in the minority on this one though as everyone I talked to said it was better than last years'

My first year I saw a guy dick swinging Prop in the merch line & loudly telling people that they didn't have good enough beer to share with him. I'm glad that it's outlier & not the norm at dld

You need sours & ipas at the stout party otherwise at best it's a short day & at worst you will die

You did try one thing from draft: BA Behemoth (Old Forrester) that I grabbed late in the afternoon. I just remember your face after you took a sip, like 'holy shit, this is hot!' lol And it was. Great taste, but man, I'm not sure I could ever drink a whole bottle of it by myself.
