I believe, the list of variants and bands came out on April 22 -- eight days before DLD.
Variant list isn't usually until day before or day of, I'm not holding my breath...
The big FU will be when they announce there are no variants this year and everyone will get two 2016 DLs instead...
Link to DLD 2016 page, so we can remember how we felt on April 22, 2016:
Nice. That was a fun read. I remember seeing that list, writing down all the variants, googling all the different barrels, and ending up just wanting to get a BBA DL in group B.
Time to take my chill pill. Argh...the wait...
Ha, I did the same thing... I was like wtf is Sauternes? Madeira? Will I like this?
We already know Amon Amarth and Goatwhore are going to be there. This is enough information to keep me happy until 6:00 am on May 13th.
I'm just happy that they announce the variants more than 24 hours before the event now. Expecting it already just seems crazy to me.
That said, I'm in D, so who knows if it's even relevant for me. My time might be better spent reviewing my cellar and verifying just how many DL bottles I have of each year so I can make an informed decision when that's all I have left to choose from.
This would be a fun poll: how many bottles of regular DL are in your cellar right now?
I'm assuming I'm on the low end because I'm new, I have 2 from '15.
0 of the regular myself.
My personal preference for opening Dark Lord right in the "sweet spot" is 5 years - so I always have a 5-year vertical (currently '12-'16) to open one every year. I'll be opening and enjoying the 2012 bottle when we get closer to the event!
9 total ranging from 2011-2016...drank a 2012 last weekend and sweetness remains...
This reminds me, @SeanBond hasn't been as active on some of these threads this year. Hope all is well, cheers!
We did inventory for our group that's been going regularly the past several years. I had 19 bottles ranging from 2010-2016 just at my house alone.
0. Only worth going for the share and to hopefully score a hanjee to trade.
Yep, I looked most of those up and created a spreadsheet and ranked what I thought would be available for group D. I was hoping the BA would last, but I don't think it did. I remember stumbling in there with a buddy who was shitfaced. He had no clue what was going on. We made it out with Trump and Pump. On the way back to the gas station on the corner (waiting for a ride), he stumbled and dropped two of his regulars. He tackled me and I immediately dropped my bottled in the grass to avoid breakage on the sidewalk. His bottle of trump fell out as well, but I was able to catch it.
I'm cellaring one each of 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Beware those that seek to trade Handjees with you or thou could endeth up with Tired Hands...
If Dark Lord hit distro at $24.99 how long would it sit on shelves?
Earlier this year, opened a full vertical (04-16). Now have 1-2012, 3-2013, 2-2014, 2-2015, 4-2016.
I agree with the 5-6 year age range as the sweet spot.
I'd say maybe a couple weeks on the less trafficked shelves in Chicago (if there is such a thing).
Anywhere else, it would not sit at all.
Its like how many licks to the center of a tootsie pop. The world may never know.
There are a ton of casual craft beer people that would grab it immediately. Most of my beer friends don't chase releases, so it still gets a solid reaction when I bring one.
Now after a year or two, the hype would probably die a bit. Not all of those people will chase it again.
Only after a year or two, for a once a year release? People still gobble up things like Hopslam and KBS pretty nearly instantaneously, even though plenty of breweries, local and national, are putting tons of similar or better beers of the same style on shelves or on tap every day.
He's too busy posting in the Chicagoland NE IPA thread!
LMFAO! I just clicked on his name and it said he was viewing that thread 9 minutes ago.
Fair point, though I'm assuming FFF's normal distribution footprint. I would also say that Dark Lord is a bit more, let's say, "divisive" than those beers.
I checked my cellar spreadsheet, 15 regular DL bottles total from 2012 on. Only one bottle of 2012 & 2014 so I guess I'm hoping for those (or older, not that I think there is a chance of that).
You dont want anything pre 2012 is what ive heard
Some pre 2012 bottles are fine, but it depends on how they were stored and they may be a bit of a gamble.
2012 itself is one of the worst IMO.
I had a 2011 late last year and it was incredible. Easily the best non-variant DL I've ever had.

There is no such thing as bad Dark Lord, only bad people.
I have managed to hold back at least one bottle from each year I have attended. '14 was my first year and you could still buy vintages that year. I have a '12 - '16 vert and will be in attendance this year. Last year I was group D and got '16 De Muerte which I thought was solid. I was a bit unsure of some of the wine barrel variants as well. I guess we will see how far the variants go this year.
As a group E guy this year, I just hope they don't hold strictly to their word: "2 bottles of vintage DL once the variants run out."
If cardamom is forced on me rather than two bottles of last years DL, I will not be a happy camper.
Group E as well...and IF Cardamom is my only choice than I'll drink that MOFO like a champ!
I have zero dark lords in the cellar. I'm not a big fan of the regular beer and always trade it away. I basically built up my vintage Bourbon county collection by trading a bottle for a sizer of BCS every year it was in 12oz bottles.
I do give my buddy a bottle every year though, and I think we've only cracked one bottle. Right now he's got one bottle of 2012-16 (soon to be 17)
Current Dark Lord Day weather forecast:
Sat. May 13, 2017
Clouds giving way to some sun.
I will be shocked if it's not torrential downpours.
