I don't think you would get the level of camaraderie if it were post D-Day during warmer daylight hours. The anticipation of the event to come and the fact that everyone is out there together in the cold dark hours of the night is a bonding force that I don't think could be replicated at a different time or place.

Even minnesotaryan knows to at least pass out in the grass.
I usually sleep soundly on an air mattres in the back of my van.

Surly works with the city and with local businesses to ensure that they are good neighbors during this event. The police don't make a big deal over the 1000+ people drinking in line on their public streets, so we must be doing something right.

    You're a crazy Californian. It's a blast.

As a Californian (still living in the sunny state), I have to say I totally get this.
I would assume you missed CFH this year by the way you are looking at this event. Had you gone to CFH 2013, I'd say that is the closest CA has gotten to Darkness Day (or Dark Lord Day, or Hunahpu Day for that matter). We were all at the bar already, just making sure we didn't get locked out (many of us traveled from far and wide for this event). Once the doors closed at 2am, the lines form, the coolers came out, the iphones turned up, footballs, blankets, a quiet party where 100s involved had one thing in common, we were there for some awesome craft beer. :-)
I promise if you get some sleep the night before, dress warm, and are a people person...you'll have a hell of time that you wouldn't trade for a simple night's sleep. ^_-
Unless work or family stops me, I'm looking forward to my first Darkness Day and some awesome Minnesota hospitality.
Now, when are we starting the thread rumoring Town Hall releases something the next day like last year....this is BA, where rumors run amock, right? If I wanted to talk about beer and facts, I'd be on ratebeer.com :stuck_out_tongue:

Whoa, whoa, whoa; are some of you suggesting there may exist a cultural divide between Minnesota and California?! #theheckd'yamean?

Yeah, just aren't getting it. And that's no big deal. But your suggestion is just to have a picnic.

I've never done the night before Darkness Day, but have done some similar things in simalar and worse weather. Honestly, bundling up and chilling out (Pun!) is part of the experience and something that is kind of enjoyable in a weird way. So, yeah, you really don't get it. No big deal.

Last year I fell asleep spooning the fire pit. I got a massive blister on my hand but no hangover so I can't complain...

don't blame the fire pit for blisters on your palm. Won't work on us, just ask Sender, that excuse didn't work for him either.

I'm coming up for the Bears/Vikings game, but heading to Surley taproom the Saturday before. I'm assuming/know I have no chance in hell of finding Darkness to buy. Anyone interested in setting up an in-person trade for some Chicago beers? We could meet at the taproom and have some pints and trade. no shipping costs!

PM me if interested. Yell at me publicly if this type of message annoys you or you want to tell me to go post in the trade forum.
