Darkness Day 2014 Thread

Darkness Tappings (ONLY outside): Barrel aged and non-barrel aged Darkness will be tapped at both outside locations at 1, 2, 3 and 4pm.

It's cool we'll be able to have ba and regular side by side, but I wonder why we have to wait until one. Not trying to be a dick, but the first thing I want when I bust in the gates at 11 is a glass of Darkness.

Having Todd the ax man will tide me over though...

I am really pumped for the Mole Bender cask and the ability to try BA and non BA Darkness side by side! We were planning to camp and arrive before 4 PM but I want to try so much of the Surly goodness that we may just go the wee-hours route to stop ourselves from overindulging in the bottleshare in line. Too much great Surly stuff that I want to try with a fresh palate!

 

Yes!!! haha I was just about to tweet you to check it out. I looked like CRAP in that video. I got so hammered. I'm gonna blame it on the full glass of Huna I apparently drank at the end of the night. Damn hot chicks from Florida makin' me do things like that...

Is 1500 the typical number of wristbands they hand out?

 

This will be my first darkness day and 1500 seems low considering I heard 500 were in line by 330 last year

 

Yes, at least it was 1500 the previous 2 years.

 

You'd be surprised to learn that the last two years there were wristbands available to people walking in just as it opened, still. I don't think that will happen this year. The event gets the BA bump, in more ways than one!

 

Yeah, it was crazy early last year, but then the line growth slowed to a crawl. People who showed up in the morning last year (including a couple of friends) still got wristbands.

Don't quote me, but if half-drunken memory serves, there have been about 1200 wristbands the past two years, or about 7500 bottles Surly was planning on selling on D-Day. It seems like they make & sell a bit more each year.

 

I also have a hazy recollection of drinking a ridiculous amount of Huna with a chick from Florida in a white jacket...overindulged so much i could barely keep it together by the time the gates actually opened the next day. I'd like to blame the extreme hangover on her, but there was just way too much other evidence around.

Bringing a more reasonable sized tasting glass this year!

 

I will agree with Corey, 1,200 seems right, the line looks worse than it really is. LOTS of space in between everyone. As for last year, 500 were not in line by 3:30. The amount of space between everyone make it seem like there are more people.

 

The top two things I recommend for people for their first Darkness day is: 1. Dress warmly!! 2. Bring a small tasting glass! I found this out the hard way the morning of my first Darkness day (Thanks in part to extremely generous BA's all night)!

 

I got there around 130 last year and there were only like 20 people there, not many started to flood the area until 3/330. No way there was 500. I will say that I parked down the road a little and stayed in my car until others started to show, I might not wait til 330 to show up but I think I was respectful of the few businesses that were still open.

 

The "Luna Huna" chick def put me over the edge but yeah, sooo much amazing beer consumed beforehand to blame it all on her. Definitely the chick you're describing though! I believe she was Hispanic? And married...lol. She was rather "overly" nice towards me, I will say. Then her husband showed up and I got super uncomfortable.

 

Alright, so now that the details are out there, how late can one arrive approximately and still get a wristband. I had planned to be in line by 6pm or so on Friday, so is that early enough? This is my first time attending and I'd hate to drive almost four hours and fail to get any Darkness. Any advice is appreciated. I'll be bringing some tasty stuff from my recent trip out west (and south), and I look forward to sharing some great beer with all of you!

 

6pm you should be fine, people showed up in the AM and got wristbands

 

Early AM the next day but still AM

 

I'm interested in these darkness chalices they will be selling. Anybody seen a picture?

Also, will Darkness see some limited distrobution again this year?
