The description. She's hoarding this massively opaque barrel aged stout screaming with notes of .... rye whiskey.

edit: the others beat me to it, didn't mean for an onslaught of replies, lol.

This was a well kept secret by surly. I'm excited to try it but am curious what the price will be like

With it saying "rye" whiskey barrels
I wonder if it's in the high west rye barrels that surly 8 was in

I'm only assuming this is going to be a "variant"? No way with their distribution map that they could BA that much Darkness...

Nonetheless Kudos to putting one of the best damn beers on some oak... I haven't been this excited for the merger of 2 things since the Kim Kayne wedding...

Label just says "2014 Darkness". Doesn't seem like it's a variant.

Can't argue that...You think this is the end of straight up RIS Darkness?

Maybe then I'll hear someone whine, "It was better before it was barrel aged." and I can finally quit liking beer.

Not sure why you say that. Goose Island, FW, Deschutes BA huge quantities of beer and distribute them more-or-less nationwide.

Something doesn't add up to me. I just was at a Surly tasting at Princeton Liquors and I specifically asked the beer rep if they ever planned on doing a barrel aged version of Darkness. He straight up just said "Not that he knew of". Why would they not want this info released? Wouldn't it just bring more hype to the beer release? Do they not want this for some reason? I don't get it.

Beer rep meaning a brewery rep or a distributor rep? If its a distributor rep there's a good chance that Surly hasn't told them. There's also a good chance that Surly wants to announce it when they want to announce it, not dribble it out a little at a time (label approvals notwithstanding).

I guess I'll be happy to be a minority voice on this one. The few times I've been able to have a barrel-aged version of Darkness, I've been underwhelmed. Now, they've likely dialed up the recipe for an official release so it's to their standards, and I'm sure it will be delicious, but everyone is barrel-aging everything and there was something great about a straight-up, hoppy, tasty stout, that needed no barrel or cellar treatment. It feels a little bit like caving in to me...

Confirmed tonight that this is not a variant - all darkness this year will be BA'd...@sean_mpls is 100% correct...

I had several bottles stolen last year, including 2011 Sour in the Rye and Vlad the Imp Aler. Left me questioning whether I should go again.

Did your source say how long the beer will be in the barrels before bottling?

Haven't most if not all of the special Darkness firkins been wood-aged Darkness with bourbon added and not truly a barrel aged Darkness? I know some true barrel aged Darkness exists but I know people confuse it with bourbon and wood-aged versions.
