Dated IPAs?

Ballast Point Sculpin IPA bottles should have a best before date on the back label, in white ink, on a black background.

 

Union Jack has a date on the bottom of the label

 

When i went to the store last week, i saw all the Ballast Point bottles had an enjoy by date on the front of the bottle on the label.

 

Founder has a yellow ink on the bottle neck about 50% of the time, it may be 100% of the time out of the brewery but they rub off easier then any other breweries ink I have come across.

FW has a Born on date. Ballast is a Best By date

 

Sculpin cans have a canning date on the bottoms.

 

Harpoon bottles have a 6 month out best by date, last I saw.

I purchased canned Sculpin in Raleigh NC today. The cans are stamped on the bottom SC 294 13197. What does that mean? The box has a sticker with 13197 on it.

Ballast Point: Uses a best before date. Ex.: BE293/03302. BE = Big Eye, 293 = Batch, 03302 is the best before (Mar. 30, 2012). All of our ales and lagers under 10% ABV have an enjoy by date that is 120 days from the moment it touches our bottling line. Our ales and lagers that are over 10% ABV have an enjoy by date of 1 year.

 

brewed on the 197th day of 2013. Or July 16th.

 

So they've changed from best-before to a brewed-on date?

The date code on our cans are based off of the Julian date coding system. Ballast Point will be moving towards this coding system for all packaged goods in the coming future. The code 13094 indicates the packaged date of April 4th 2013. The first two number “13” indicates the year and the last three digits “094” refer to how many days into the year. In this case 094 days out of 365 puts us on April 4th.

Here in Connecticut we just got Ballast Point's Sculpin IPA bombers. date on the bottle is two weeks old. awesome. finally I get to drink a left coast beer that isn't old and gone.
