Man it's been a while posting out here, but I have a legit beef. Why/How can Surly be pushing 6 month old Furious cans at a an on/off sale place that has it on tap. WTF?
On July 3 I found Furious that was canned June 30. That seems to be a store issue, not a Surly issue.
The distributor for Surly is Johnson Bros, who at least in NE will buy back any and all out-of-date beer back at 100% cost. So let's keep blame where it is due which is on the owner/manager of the store/bar in question.
Just for the sake of clarification: you're referring to an establishment with an on/off-sale license which offers Surly Furious in both cans and on-draught, correct? There aren't too many on-off sale licenses in the Metro area, proper, so that narrows the selection of wholesalers a little bit. But BrettHead is correct that the management of the establishment needs to be made aware of the issue, and this should be done in as tactful a manner as you can manage; grousing on teh innernets is only so effective...
At Chaz: Yes and this place doesn't have much space to sit on beer. A couple months ago I found last years Bitter Brew there. lol I think it's great they offer Surly on-draught, but they should also be allowed fresh cans, not someones buy backs. At Brett: I hear you. As for Blame, I'm sure this on/off could care less how old the beer is their getting. Just seems strange, as this place is right around the corner from their tap room. Can bought back beer be sold again? Guess I'm just spoiled with the freshy fresh, so I'll drink my January Furious and be quiet.. Cheers!
I grabbed some Abrasive dated from January on my way up to the cabin last weekend (Off sale only) and while it wasn't the best I'd ever had, it's still better than just about everything else out there. They had some dated from November as well. Figure I'll pick those up next year.
I posted that because you started the thread with an inflammatory post that didnt have much substance behind it. Also, I was planning on a troll flaming you immediately. The dice came up snake eyes this time Are we into a new era of semi rational discussion on BA? Also, why am I responding to this? wait, am I still typing?
I've had year old abrasive... That stuff holds up better than any DIPA I've encountered. I mean its not amazing like when its fresh, but still better than most other DIPAs out there.
I wonder about certain distributors. I took back a 6-pack of Big Sky IPA I had purchased at a store and showed one of the owners the date on the can. He said, "That's weird, we were not even open then." Went back and checked the rest of the Big Sky cans, all of them with the same or close to BBD. Picked up another 6-pack from another brewery, out of date as well. The distributor unloaded all their old stock on this newly opened store.
But was it still a great value? On an unrelated note I just bought another 12 pack of Saga. The store I bought it at had it nice and fresh, I didn't even look at the best by date cause that shit churns like nobodies business.
