Hi guys, as some will know, I'm planning a beer-cation to NYC/NE this summer. I'm almost finished with my plan, but I have a day empty in New York. So I'm looking for a small day trip around New York that I can go early in the morning and come back at night. Just a place with nice local beer and great view or anything interesting will do, thanks!

Philly would seem the best. 2 hour train or bus ride and so much to do as far as beer, food, culture.

a day empty in NYC. Thats terrible. Being stuck in a place like that where's there is nothing to do.
Give the beer a rest for the afternoon. Go to the Met, take the circle line see a show on Broadway (or better yet off Broadway) and go to a good beer bar after dinner.

Your right Philly has so much more good and culture than NYC. He can go to Pats and than see the mail in the basement of the Vet.

What's this about MORE than NYC? I said none of this. Just throwing out a suggestion as he asked for a day trip recommendation outside of NYC.

But I do think there's some good stuff to see in Philly and I'd skip Pat's and Geno's. Reading Market (I think that's the name) is where I'd do some heavy grubbing. Then you got the Liberty Bell, site of the Constitutional Convention, the Rocky steps. What's wrong with Philly all of the sudden? haha.

    I love Philly.
It just annoys me that he has a free day in NYC and can't figure out what to do.
Are you headed to the big Apple?

I'm giving him some leeway. He didn't share much about his visit so I don't know how short or long he's been here and he didn't say why there's a gap. Could be he left a gap to do something outside of NYC, which is reasonable.

I will be in NYC myself in about a week or so and then will be there frequently from here on out. I've been trying to get some of you East Coast BAs coordinated for a Taste of New Mexico share. Have you any interest?

I'm trying to visit every part of Manhatten(?) and some well-known place of Queens/Brooklyn. I wanted to visit Long Island but I don't have the drivers license so that's out for me... It will be appreciated if you can suggest me some places that I might miss in NYC.

I'll visit SoHo, Battery Park, Brooklyn Bridge, Eataly, Washington Mews, High Line, MOMA, Times Square, Central Park, Broadway, Wiliamsberg, and lots of breweries. I'll be staying in NYC for around 10 days so I just guessed I might have a empty plan day.

Take a picture of the corner of 1st Ave and 1st street the Nexus of the universe. Btw 9th street espresso for all your coffee needs. Also, if you like French food in a laid back setting check out Almond in the flatiorn district. And the flatiron bldg is the most iconic and photogenic bldg in NYC IMO.
    Cheers.

if you want a day trip outside of NYC and have no license and obvisouly you are a fan of beer I would hit up the Carton tap room in NJ. It's a really nice ferry ride from the city and can def be done in a day with some time to spare to do a few other things in NYC.

This is a great idea. The ferry has two stops, WTC and somewhere else in Manhattan, and then goes to 2 stops in Jersey - Highlands and Atlantic Highlands (I believe). You can rent bikes at Sandy Hook, see the absolutely beautiful beaches (some of my favorite in NJ), and then hit up Carton after. Also, you can take lots of beer home with you (Carton's limits have been anywhere between 1 and 4 cases of beer lately :sunglasses:) depending on what is available that day. Also, lots of us have good food recommendations! @augiecarton knows even more, he has given this spiel before.

    EDIT here's an old post:

Great idea but Carton is open limited hours so check with them first.

I'd take the Metro North up into the Hudson Valley. There's great hiking and spectacular scenery as well as beer spots up that way.
