I have a sister that lives in the D.C. area and is coming back to the midwest for Thanksgiving/Christmas. Any suggestions on beer that she could bring back to me? The requirements are as follows:

Not available in Minnesota or Wisconsin distro
Readily available on shelves in the D.C. metro right now
Mostly looking for fresh IPA/DIPA or big beers for the cellar (stouts, barleywine, BA stuff)
Not outrageously priced. She isnt the richest little sis out there, but willing to put in some work to bring me back beers - which is awesome.

I appreciate any help you folks out there can give us. And if you ever need a trade partner from my neck of the woods, let me know. Cheers and thanks again!

Wait, you're expecting her to bring you back some beers, and to pay for them with her own money? Why not just send her some money and tell her what you want?

I usually pay her back when she gets home. Neither of us have tons of cash to burn so I'm just trying to rule out overly expensive bottles. I would be happy to tell her what I want if I had a better idea of what was available....hence the post.

What "big beers" are not outrageously priced?

I would say check out the notable DMV releases thread. That contains all the info you need. Sheers.

I'd recommend Hardywood's Gingerbread Stout, and if she's near to DC Brau, On The Wings Of Armageddon. Neither is terribly cheap ($9-10 for a bomber of the Hardywood and $18 for a six pack of Wings), but they're some of the best the area has in bottles/cans. Alewerks Cafe Royale (bourbon barrel aged coffee stout) may be available at a few places ($10ish), and if she can find it fresh, Blue Mountain's Hopwork Orange is a tasty orange-forward IPA at a reasonable price point. We've also got Cigar City's Jai Alai, although I'm not sure how fresh the stuff on shelves is right now.

Union Duckpin or DoubleDuckpin if she can find it.

Do you know what part of DC she is in or what metro stop she is closest to? That will help us let you know which shops she should check out.

I'll echo Hardywood Gingerbread stout and Alewerks Cafe Royale. At $10/bomber on average, they are some of the best local beers available. Hardywood GBS is all over the place right now. Cafe Royale is more limited.
