I set it up. I'm the Beer Director at Meridian Pint. Beer list not finalized as of yet.

    Just curious, is that legal?

DC's "grey laws" allow self-importation of anything that isn't already distributed through other channels, so it's technically legal. People have definitely stretched the limits in the past (like that event that was pouring Hill Farmstead growlers).

For the record, there was no stretching of the laws there - Shaun Hill just threw a sh*t fit and called the bars himself to bitch them out. Apparently it's OK for anyone/everyone to buy growlers there and take them home (or ship them all over the world), but if you re-sell them at a commercial establishment, they couldn't possibly have been cared for properly.

Yea, it's legal as @scottDC pointed out. As long as you pay the appropriate taxes/fee's when you bring it back, it can be sold legally.

I understand that $12 a can isn't that bad considering DC prices, but 4 packs of Topper are cheap. Were not talking $18 - $20 4 packs here.

Apparently the growlers shocked him, stuff he hadn't brewed in a while. So the quality of them were probably sketchy. I think he has cause to be upset.

I guess it's all relative. A $6 can of DCBrau represents about a 4x mark up of the bar's cost. A $12 can of Topper is about the same 4x of cost. If anything it's the former that's egregious ....
