And I don't mean for the worse! I had Moralité for the first time a little over a year ago, after reading rave reviews about it here. I thought it was a decent IPA, but not amazing: very good aroma, but lacking in flavor and body. A couple months back I got another six-pack that was fresher and I enjoyed it more, but it still wasn't what I would call world-class. But about 2 weeks ago, I picked up a six-pack - not even all that fresh, bottled on August 11 - and every bottle has been absolutely stellar. It's a huge improvement in flavor, the body feels fuller and even the aroma seems to be somewhat better. I had the last one yesterday, and it was just as good as the first (though I'd been keeping them all in the fridge). Did something happen, or have my taste buds just come into alignment with this beer? If I enjoyed every pack of Moralité that I bought this much, I wouldn't feel bad about all those American IPAs that are just across the border that never get distributed up here.
The brewery has purchased and added some new toys, a newer and improved hop cannon, a centrifuge and a hop back.
I had Moralite for the first time in August. I drink lots and lots of IPAs. I thought it was a truly excellent IPA. I can't comment on whether it has changed - but it is sure good the way it is!
Last one I had was nice, but was all hops and zero malt. Does the latest batch have any malt presence?
It hasn't noticeably changed as far as I can perceive. Although I will say that I do feel like it falls off pretty hard, so take that with a grain of salt. The best I have had it is within a few days to a couple weeks of being brewed. I would imagine that your change in perception has to do with a lot of factors not necessarily related to the beer (palate, environment, etc.). I do agree about its lack of body, though. To me it is an absolutely excellent IPA, but I wish that body-wise it was more in between it and Yakima (which I find to be a tiny bit heavy to be very drinkable). Like a Yakima light that smells like Moralité I don't know if you've gotten a chance to try the Auval Arcane 17 IPA, but it is a really nice balance between a decent body, a nice bright nose and a bitter/fruity flavor. I don't know if it is the best good Quebec IPA, but I think it is the most drinkable good Quebec IPA.
I've never even heard of Auval before, maybe they don't get distributed in Montreal? As for your comment about Moralité falling off, what's weird to me is that these bottles were drinking great over a month after brewing. I think I've had it fresher and didn't enjoy it as much as I did recently. And yes, the body seemed fuller. Can't tell if I'm just hallucinating, but if so, I hope I never stop!
So you're saying I have to go back to Montreal? HAAAA! I was already planning a trip to Toronto so that will just be an add-on; twist my arm why don't you?
It's a brewery out of Gaspesie started by one of the guys from Pit Caribou started. I think it is very new, or at least new to bottling. I know they had some at Peluso and then at Veux-tu une bière. They make a Saison, a fruit beer (not sure if it's a sour or not), and an IPA. I've only had the IPA but it was excellent. Pretty expensive, though. Hopefully the distribution has nowhere to go but up and the prices nowhere to go but down.
Well now you've got my attention. Probably won't be back to Peluso for a while (I scored a bunch of Heady Topper yesterday, and by the time that's gone I'll have tons of homebrew to drink), but I'll be sure to look for them next time I go.
The Auval Framboëse is a sour beer, I just finished one of my two bottles of it tonight and it was very good. I haven't tried the Arcane 17 yet, but I have one in the fridge. I'm sipping on an à la fut session ipa v right now and loving it - although I'd say its mostly hops.
