Overnight, a De Garde bottle from the recent release, Ivy: Lavender with Spruce Tips, was sitting unrefrigerated on a counter, minding it's own business, when it apparently decided to self-destruct. I walked into the kitchen and smelled a delicious Lambic, and immediately thought that the bottle I drank last night had been rinsed out and there is no way it could be so pungent, and, lo and behold, I look on the kitchen counter and see this. Anybody ever hear of a De Garde or Lambic bottle self-destructing?

Never put lavender in beer or food, That is my motto. It belongs in cleaning stuff and fragrance. But that has no bearing on why your bottle blew up. Sorry for your loss!

Sure speaks to the integrity of their capping. Never thought I'd see a bottle blow out the side.

Hmm. This is looks like the carbonation developed, or was cold, and rapidly coming up to temp, and had enough that it found a possible manufacturing defect on the bottle, and blew out on the molds injection point.
Was there sediment in the bottle? You may have unleashed something and it created a perfect storm of kaboom.

Although not a De Garde beer, I've had a similar self-destruction, only with a 64oz growler. That was a mess.

Likely a bottle defect, based on reports I've read in past of similar incidents and their likely causes.

I've had a few bottles succeed in self immolation in my day as a homebrewer. Luckily I was around when it happened. Just a dull thud like sound, and then a stream started.

At least it didn’t end up on your ceiling. I’ve had that experience

You should report that to the brewery along with the pic. They may have an entire batch of bad bottles in the marketplace that they and the bottle mfgr would want to know about.

That’s the problem with initiates. You tell them to crack open a beer…

That's a certifiable homebrewer experience. We started brewing in about 1970 using the then-standard brown refillable quart crown cap bottles. In an early batch, we either bottled too early or added too much priming sugar. After one explosion, we uncapped all the bottles, let them foam to their hearts' content, then recapped them. Lesson learned. Maybe owners of de Garde Ivy/Lavender/Spruce who have access to a capper could open them in the sink and re-cap when deactivated?

Would be hard to track most of these people down, but de Garde could reach out via various methods (social media, email blast, text alerts) to subscribers to let them know and spread the word. I would just encourage people to open and drink their bottles soon, with recapping as an alternative.

Right, that’s kind of a given for me but I sometimes forget that not everyone is in the habit (or has the necessary fridge capacity) to keep all their beer cold.

I have not witnessed a deGarde bottle blowing up but I had the pleasure to witness, and smell for 90 minutes or so, cask eruptions at the facility in Tillamook during a very warm weather stretch. -raspberry and sumac in my olfactory memory.

This is most likely a defect in their bottle. Should the packaging crew have caught that? Maybe. But it is most likely an issue with the glass manufacturer. I have seen countless imperfections, especially around the shoulder and I am guessing this was a highly carbonated beer from them, temps are starting to go up around the country and that was enough to create a touch more internal pressure... maybe a low-pressure system weather-wise... The delta was enough to cause the failure.

I would make a point of putting on some glasses before touching those bottles. It might be a old wives tale, but I remember hearing stories of people getting blinded by exploding homebrew bottles during prohibition.
