I have not, but whose kit is it? If it's a local kit can you post a link to the recipe.

I believe it's actually a rogue branded kit

I believe this beer is a lager. A Maibock, if you will. Are you able to pull off lager temps?

Really weird that Dead Guy is listed as a maibock but says Dead Guy Ale on the label. Even worse, the label says it's made with their Pacman ale yeast... What's the deal?

Dead Guy is an ale, regardless of the fact that Rogue calls it a Maibock.

It was originally called a Maierbock, after head brewer John Maier. It has a Maibock grist, but the yeast and fermentation temperatures are ale practice and procedure, so it is an ale in my book.

This was the recipe they came up with on the Can You Brew It podcast, after talking to John Maier:
    http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/can-you-brew-recipe-rogue-dead-guy-ale-175382/
It wouldn't be difficult to convert to an extract recipe.

Agreed. Perhaps at one time the grist was perceived as a bit Maibock-ish, as there is some Munich malt to it, although I would leave crystal malt out of my Maibock, if I were to brew one. The hops, Perle and Sterling, could get used in a Maibock (being of Germanic origins), although you would use less of them than are used in Dead Guy Ale, and centennial would be a stylistic mistake. Obviously, they are not using lager yeast, but Pacman is a fairly neutral ale yeast, and might be used to make a Mai-mock.

    Interesting...
"Brewing Instruction Sheet, Bottling Instructions, Dead Guy Ale Recipe Pack (Malt), 1 Brewers Crystals (56% Maltose Corn Syrup Solids) 1lb bag, 2 Amber Briess Dry Malt 1lb bags, 1 Pilsen Light Briess Dry Malt 3lb bag, 1 Priming Sugar bag, 1 Czech Saaz (Alpha: 3.3% Beta: 4.2%) packet, 1 Rogue Farms Independent Hops 2010 Hop Pellets 1oz. packet, 50 Bottle Caps, Grain Steeping Bag, and Hop Steeping Bags"

    A few issues/questions I see...
    - I don't think anyone knows exactly what's in Amber Dry Malt Extract (i.e. what malt types and proportions), so it would be hard for anyone to say if this kit is a reasonable attempt at Dead Guy. Though I would assume if Rogue put their name on it, they must be happy with it.
    - Brewer's Crystals? That's a new one for me.
    - I don't see any steeping grains, yet a Grain Steeping Bag is listed as a part of the kit. I wonder if there's something missing from the list**.
    - The kit doesn't come with yeast*. Mini-Fail.

Edit: *Actually I like the fact that they aren't packaging perishable yeast inside these pre-packaged kits. The mini-fail is that you have to buy your yeast from a different place than is selling the kits.
**Okay, now I'm guessing that the 'Dead Guy Recipe Pack" is the steeping grains. Again, without knowing what they are, nobody will be able to say whether the kit is reasonable or not.

I wouldn't be surprised if this kit is pretty darn old... old ingredients = sub par beer.
EDIT: 2010 hops?? Please tell me you didn't actually buy this thing!

If ya don't want easy, why not give all grain a shot. It's "easy" to toss in a handful of shit and call it something special.

PS. find another kit. Rouges shit sucks, have your lhbs help you put a fresher kit together from their own stuff.

Making GREAT beer with simple ingredients is far from easy. Try mastering this first.
