I think he's on point with the Heady/DIPA and Old Rasputin/RIS comments. Except that 90 Minute is a sub par DIPA. I can't believe that it still appears to be well regarded. I thought it was weak 8 years ago, before there were great DIPAs everywhere you looked.

Is this one of the 18 most over-rated beer articles?

Yes, Old Rasputin is as transcendent as its name suggests.

Clever and well written humor piece. Also -- nicely placed F bombs....

I may not agree with everything said in that article, but it sure was entertaining to read.

I agree with the majority of the list, but as others have said, I would question the inclusion of Ol' Raspy. Regardless of price, I feel its one of the BEST widely available RISs out there. It could get marked up to Founders prices of $14+ for a 4-pack tomorrow, and I would still buy it (and would still choose it over Founders RIS and most others).

Not saying it compares to the best in the world, but it's not one of those beers that's only considered good for its price point.

Well, we can't go back and re-read it to decide because it appears he's edited the column and removed the statement.

Meh, I think I agree with him. I like Anchor Steam, but I get his point. Also "like" High Life, as far as BMC goes, lots of college memories there.

rated by whom may i ask? this reminds me of a list i once saw called most overrated reporters. It included steven spielberg, quentin traction and christopher nolan. these days anything that's rated at all is considered overrated by somebody.

Stella Artois: This is clearly just Belgium fucking with us. Stella Artois has to be the very worst beer they make.

I agree that he overstated his point, but I think he was trying to say no beer is worth jumping through hoops for. It's just beer. I would argue that in the strictest definition of "overrated" the beers he mentions might be slightly overrated - if something can be amazing but still overrated...

I have no problem with the list. Old Raspy is about as boring of a stout that I've had.
There's nothing that stands out about it for me at all.

That's quite literally the entire point. Were you hoping for an objective, quantifiable breakdown for why each beer is "overrated" (an inherently subjective quality, at any rate)?

Seriously, disagree all you like. I don't get the pure hate people have for things like this. They come and complain about points it never tried to make; about angles and directions it never purported to encompass.

All I can figure is the author must have pissed in your Cheerios (read: dissed one of your favorite beers).

In other words: YES, it's an opinion piece. It's also meant to be humorous. If you didn't notice either of those components, then I don't know what else anyone can do for you.

I took offense to the "your local breweries flagship" as well
He really needs to be more specific. There are plently of small breweries here in the Northwest that have excellent flagship beers. Fremont inter urban IPA, Georgetown Manny's Pale (an Lucille... mostly Lucille), North Fork ESB come to mind

Unbelievable he put Old Rasputin on the list. I recently move to Utah - the worse beer state (I think). But I'm happy to see I can always get Old Rasputin just a few blocks away at the state liquor store. It's cheap, outstanding, and always available.

Yeah, that's what kills it for being a flagship IMO. I'm sure there are a few breweries out there whose flagship is also their best... but I'd also wager they either aren't that good or at least don't brew many styles. That being said, there are some delicious "flagships" out there. So at this point, I don't know what the hell my point is.

His target demographic must have been that highly coveted "people not too pretentious to be bothered reading something about High Life that also included craft beers such as Kentucky Bourbon Ale, Heady Topper, Old Rasputin, Magic Hat #9 and Anchor Steam if they could suppress their disgust at such an inferior beer being included and don't take this stuff quite so serious anyway" group.
