I sent a trade box out on Monday with a HF Works of Love (SARA) as well as some extras (W00tstout, Second Fiddle). The box was delivered on Thursday afternoon, but unfortunately the guy I was trading with was out of town when it arrived, and the box sat in his building's mail room until he got back in town today. When he got to it, the box was torn and both the W00tstout and the WoL were gone. Since it sat in the mail room for several days, it's impossible to know if this happened before or after it was delivered, but would it be possible to get anything back from FedEx in this scenario? And if so, what would you recommend telling them was in the box?

FedEx will likely never give a dime back on this one. The fact that someone accepted (and likely signed for) the package is enough for FedEx to consider it a successful transaction. If the box arrived like that, the recipient is well within his/her rights to decline the delivery and have it returned to the sender. Since it was accepted, FedEx will (rightly) state that there is no way to prove the box arrived in such a condition as it is now found. Seems likely this was torn open while your trading partner was out of town.

I know this isn't helpful and hindsight is 20-20, but having a box delivered while you're out of town is just asking for trouble. Whether it's sitting on a front step or in a mailroom, too many people can get their hands on it. Might have to chalk this one up as a loss as it seems your partner was robbed by someone who had access to the mailroom between delivery and his arrival home.

Did your trade partner tell you he'd be out of town?

He didn't, but I also shipped a couple of days later than I had told him I would due to unforeseen circumstances, so I certainly take a share of the blame. He would've been in town had I shipped when I said I would.

That adds an extra wrinkle IMO. Hopefully your trade partner is easy to deal with, this could be quite the predicament for you.

Best of luck, any chance the mail room has video recordings?

I'm gonna suck it up and make good on this because I have another WoL, and don't want to be a dick.

That's good on you. This is another example where communication, even over communication is key in these transactions. Like the others said, it's extremely unlikely fedex will do a thing.

As you should. But kudos for doing the right thing right away. Unfortunately you won't get anywhere at this point by contacting FedEx.

Every time I see some one ask a question like this I cringe.

I'm not judging, but when we ship we fed ex or UPS you agree youre not shipping alcohol. If you, subsequently try to collect on a lost or damaged shipment by telling them you shipped something you didn't youre engaging in insurance fraud for which you could be prosecuted. Asking questions about it on a open forum is incredibly foolish. Act accordingly.

Perhaps your partners building has a security cameras and you could ask to review the footage? Even is there isn't a camera in the mail room if he could maybe see the package being delivered and what sort of shape its in.

This seems like a bit of an overreaction to my question, imo. I was not asking "how do I commit fraud?" but instead was asking whether or not there was any chance of recourse. I've been trading for nearly 5 years and never had something like this happen, so I honestly wasn't sure, but I figured since I was shipping alcohol against FedEx's TOS, I was probably SOL. Can't hurt to ask right? I guess I did indicate I was considering lying about what was stolen, so perhaps that raised some red flags.

We are pursuing this right now. I won't be able to ship the replacement until next week anyway, so in the meantime he's trying to figure out if anything can be done on his end.

I call BS on this guy. After all, who is going to steal only 2 out of 3 beers?

Dude has 76 trades under his belt with 100% positive feedback. He also sent me pictures of the box, which looks like it was hastily ripped into. I could easily see a situation in which someone ripped it open and just quickly grabbed whatever they could and missed the smaller can among the larger bottles. I have no reason to doubt this guy's story, as it would be a pretty elaborate conspiracy if he was lying.

I just received a box today from a friend that was supposed to have two HF growlers and an Alter Ego. The box was shipped through UPS. Someone clearly opened his three shipper, took out one of the growlers and packed the other two in a much larger box. I have no idea why they'd only take one and ship the other two beers.

About a year ago i shipped a vanilla bean dark lord to texas with 4 other bombers and 2 mini snifters.

When the box got there it was repacked. Both mini snifters were missing and 3 of the bombers were missing. There were no signs of leakage or broken bottles in the box at all. The only 2 beers to make it were the VBDL and another random bomber. I still don't know what happened but considering the other random bombers were extras i was just thrilled they didnt take the VBDL.

You dodged a serious bullet there. Thank god the typical UPS/FedEx bro doesn't have the slightest clue what's valuable and what isn't.
