Where does it exist? Outside of Lewis and Clark I've yet to have even a remotely decent IPA in this state. WTF? Tamarack was supposed to be decent and was average at best. At Bonsai in Whitefish and same old same. Decent aroma but that's all. Here for another week and feel like I should just stop trying to find a decent local brew.
Yak attack IPA by cabinet mountain brewing. Scepter head IPA by draught works brewing. Single malt IPA by Blackfoot river. Those are my top 3 MT IPAs you will find in whitefish
if you go down to tamarack in lakeside they have headwall double IPA on right now. It won the national double IPA championship last year. Beating out boneyard and some of the big boys. I've never had it though. MT has some really great beer but it takes a little searching.
Try skipping any of the canned ipas they are all below average. Your best bet is draft only of the ones listed above.
Is it decent beer or just a decent IPA that you're looking for? Red Lodge, which we get in Casper, is more than decent. I just finished a strong Red Ale from The Great Northern Brewing in Whitefish. Uber makes some very tasty beers. IPAs other than the one from Big Sky I haven't had a chance to try.
@drinkin-beeers Thanks for the beta on Blackfoot. Just stopped by this place. What an awesome spot! Folks in Helena are psyched to have this place to go drink beer in town. Had a pint of Single Malt and grabbed a growler of their Double Mosaic. The Single Malt was served a little too cold but it was a great IPA. Could have used a little more hop flavor/aroma but I didn't have time to let it warm up. Their Double Mosaic is phenomenal! I only had a taste but grabbed a growler to go. Excited to get to my next destination and drink some more of this one. Very smooth for such a High IBU beer. Great hop aroma and flavor. Brewery is the place to go on a Sunday. Got a Pint and a half gallon growler of awesome 10% beer for $11! Best IPAs I've had in MT by far.
Damn should of let me know I live in Helena! Blackfoot is my favorite brewery in the state. Any other MT spots on trip?
Went to Beehive in Big Sky last night. Overall was quite impressive. Had a really interesting Single Hop Sorachi Ace double IPA. Never really had that hop and certainly not a single hop beer. One of the most interesting tasting IPAs I've ever had. Tons of Lemon and Dill which sounds terrible but was actually quite good. Very smooth and easy to drink. Had three different beers and all were well executed.
I think they are a rather new brewery so that's cool to hear. Did you stop by lone peak brewery at all? Are you on a ski trip?
