I have to go to a do at the London Irish Centre in Camden Square (just off the Kilburn High Road) this evening and was wondering if any English BAs could recommend a good real ale pub or 'beer bar' in the vicinity. I want to have a quick pint before I go into the venue, which no doubt only serves Guinness. It's a part of London I'm not familiar with so I'd appreciate any recommendations.

    Many thanks,

    Madigan

There's nothing in that area that I would recommend, Kilburn has always been a good beer desert more likely than not because of the large Irish community who tend to go for lagers and guinness over bitter!

Neighbouring NW5 (Kentish Town) has a few decent venues in the Pineapple and the Southampton, but for Kilburn itself there is nothing special although I'm sure you'll find 'some' real ale in most pubs but as for the choice and quality I couldn't comment.

Just had a quick look (to substantiate my claims) and whilst the GBG is not a definitive guide, there are zero entries for NW6 in the 3 issues kicking about in our office ('09/'11/'12)

Thanks for that Ruds, I figured Kilburn wouldn't be up to much but apparently I got my wires crossed and the event is on at the other London Irish Centre, which is in Camden Town. I know Camden Town pretty well but haven't been there since I converted to decent beer. Any ideas?

Camden Town itself has never been that great for real ale as it is a bohemian / arty type of place where people tend to get pissed on cheap lager and cider before gigs or go for wine and cocktails, that said the average boozer will have a better range of good beer than Kilburn.

If you don't mind the fact it doesn't have any cask conditioned offerings then get yourself to Brew Dog - about 5 minutes walk from Camden Town tube

up to 10 Brew Dog beers on draft, plus another 7 or 8 guests from Scandatlantia and the US

I second the Brewdog Camden recommendation - I don't often visit London but I was in there back in December. Great bar with a superb choice of beers; there's bound to be something good available.....
