I’m off the next couple of days, the wife has work, kids have school. Don’t really have the time to go to any breweries, have to back home on Long Island by 3 but I know DeCicco’s has a good selection. If I were bored either tomorrow or Wednesday which DeCicco’s has the best selection and maybe some stuff I can’t get on LI or in NYC? Thanks in advance. I should add, I suppose, any distro within 30 minutes of the Throgs Neck would work, doesn’t have to be a DeCicco’s.
Coming from LI, I would recommend their Armonk location. There is a good sized refrigerated selection on the main floor. And on the 2nd floor, is a large bar and a lot of bottles; Belgians, local wild ales, Scandinavian and a ton of other options. You will also find a bocce court which is certainly unique for a grocery store.
Thanks. I’m looking for beer to go, though, not looking to hang out. I should have specified, I’m looking for stouts, IPAs and Jack’s Abby/Von Trapp German style stuff. No interest in wild, funk, or sour beers.
I've only been to the Armonk location but can definitely say it's worth the trip. I try to get there once or twice a year to stock up on some stuff I can't get in NJ. My routine is to hit the bar for a beer or two, browse the upstairs bottle selection for a while, then head to the coolers downstairs on my way out. I know you said you weren't looking to hang out, but the bar upstairs always has some great stuff on tap. Had Weihenstephaner/Sierra Nevada Braupakt and St. Bernardus Abt 12 on tap a few weeks ago. Either way, the bartenders and staff are extremely friendly and will help you find whatever you are looking for. They have plenty of all of those things. I picked up a bunch of Jack's Abby and Urban Chestnut during my last trip. I'm sure they had Von Trapp too, I just wasn't looking for it.
the Ardsley store has a great selection..not as big as Armonk or Brewster, but its super easy to get to and right off the NY Thruway (just north from the Cross County Expwy)..about 20-25 mins from TNB
Since moving up to Westchester, I've been to both the Millwood and Armonk locations. Both have a pretty good selection, but I'd tip my cap to the Armonk one. The Millwood location is right off the Taconic though, adding the convenience factor. If you're looking at growlers/crowlers, the Armonk location usually has a better tap list. They also have a larger can/bottle selection. Millwood has one full aisle. Armonk has several aisles upstairs and two I believe downstairs. I hear excellent things about the Brewster location but that one is more of a trek. Brew and Company is another good option - https://www.brewandcompany.com/ - they offer 12 taps - 11 beer and 1 cider. Good selection of bottles/cans. In Bedford Hills right off the Saw Mill. Cheers!
Another vote for Armonk from me. Best vibe of the bunch and the guys that work there are awesome. Brew and Co is also dope. If you're looking to go further south, come hang at Beer Noggin in Bronxville. Not the largest selection but we try to keep it lean and mean with fresh and interesting beer. Deliveries coming in all day today so we will have some fresh stock after the holiday weekend. Ask for Brendan or Doug and we will take care of you.
I haven't been to Armonk, but for me personally both Brewster and Millwood are better than any beer store I've been to in NYC in terms of selection and layout. Prices aren't bad for 4packs of IPAs from Greenpoint, KCBC, Singlecut, Finback and Interboro - most singles are $6 from those guys. They also have Grimm stouts (I assume they get cans, but sell out quick) and definitely had the recent Jack's Abbey Framminghammer beers. May catch an Equilibrium IPA on tap as well and they do growlers in Millwood (and perhaps crowlers as well) - assume they do at Brewster as well, but can't 100% confirm.
I ended up not going. I was going to explore but I’ve got enough beer and wanted to save some money. I did Sand City, DubCo and Barrage last Sunday, picked up cans at SC on Wednesday and did Other Half and Threes yesterday so it seemed kinda like overkill to do this too. I definitely appreciated the feedback though.
I actually liked my second can more than my first. It’s come together nicely. Very smooth for 8.8%. Little burn, nice citric taste. I don’t know if you had For Science 5.0 but that was fantastic. Hands down, for me, the best beer of theirs I’ve had. The Barrage DIPA (The Jerk Store Called) was really good too. If you see it, try it.
Only tried Dubco’s IPL which was ok. I gave up on Barrage a while ago as everything I’ve had from them has been pretty terrible (Necromancer, Yada yada, Blackcherry saison). Their early ipas were just not good. Small Craft in Amityville is putting out a nice variety of stuff in a similar style location as Barrage but with less parking and a nicer interior.
I never had Small Craft, I’ll have to keep my eyes open for that. If you see the Barrage DIPA you should give it a shot, it’s the best beer I’ve had of theirs.
