If it can get from the brewery to me in one day, its local. If its in my state, localer. If its in my city, localer. If its brewed in the back, localest.

Agree with this, being in the more-kick-assier VA side of it, I think of any part of VA I've lived in as "local" to a certain degree. Also DC, but sadly not Baltimore.

The other main thing is beers I have access to that I know a larger population doesn't. Which is why a lot if Baltimore beer I think is local to B'more, because I don't see it in NoVa .

There isn't a universally accepted answer.

    Next...

One should just reinforce that one should drink local. So, drink local.

Yeah, no one definition fits all. I remember an old BA Magazine Beer Smack article saying 90 miles from your location, as long as the offerings are quality (I could be misremembering). Personally, one of my favorite breweries is Live Oak, which is in Austin. I am in Houston, I don't consider that a local but take great pride that such quality German offerings are made in my state.

Local means not using a distributor for a beer purchase :O) Not perfect, I know, but it's about getting rid of the middle man.

I'll say within a Tri-state area, but that's more of a Northeastern idea.

For me, drinking local is St. Louis city and suburbs including the Metro East across the river in Illinois.

I think local is subjective for multiple reasons.
If one person has 20 breweries within 20 miles, and another person is 150 miles from the nearest brewery, they are not on the same playing field.
For me local is not very important. Beer that I like, at a price I am willing to pay, that is readily available, is what I look for.
If that happens to be the brewery closest to me then great. If it happens to be a brewery from half way across the country, or half way around the world, so be it.

I'd say metro-area.. I live outside Chicago, so I can't really say Bent River in Moline is "local"..

To me, local means within the immediate commuting area. This is going to mean something different to many. For me, it means within a few minute drive. When I am in San Diego, local means regional...

Here in the upstate of SC, there's not a ton of great breweries yet (Quest stands out as one on the right track, though). I personally consider Asheville breweries (WW, Highland, etc) and Northern/NE GA (Creature Comforts, Burnt Hickory, Terrapin) to be local as well as breweries on the SC coast (Coast, Westbrook, Holy City). Given the lack of close-by options (Greenville, SC is not much closer than Athens, GA) I define it both as in-state and nearby out-of-state.

We have the "Locale" scheme here where pubs display a sign above the pump clip. "Local" is determined by each Branch, in towns a 20 mile road radius and in rural areas a 30 mile road radius would be normal.Apologies for the picture quality
Notice the clarity of the unfiltered beer and the lacing , typical of a well kept cask ale.

There should probably be a designated 'drink local day' at this point in which bars would only carry locally produced beer. Depending on the marketing of it, it could be a good way to pump revenue into the local economy and support homegrown product

For me, within about 3 hours driving distance is local. That said, it drives me crazy that I can't get fresh logs when I try to get kegs using that parameter.
