Drinking local is all about supporting the local economy and local jobs. Playing devil's advocate, there's a Sam Adams brewery (10) minutes from my house although the main brewery and offices are based in Boston. SA refuses to put a logo on the local plant because they want the name and brand recognition to be associated only with Boston even though Cincy, OH and Foglesville, PA kicks Boston's butt in total output. Can I still call Sam Adams a local beer or do I have to live in Boston?

There is some imaginative stretching of the word "local" , it surely means in the immediate neighbourhood.I wouldn't consider anywhere which I can't reach in an hour to be local and that's stretching things.
On a UK note, "local" is another word for a pub.Usually one in the same town.

So, someone who lives in Yreka CA gets to call the San Diego breweries local? They're 760 miles apart.

Sweet! My Father-in-Law works at the B-ville location and have been there several times also, they really "do it right" for the annual Oktoberfest bash for the employees and their families!

In the spirit of this thread, can the PA location still be considered "local" for both of us?

I consider my locals to be within a 1 hour drive. The more notables - Victory, DFH, Tired Hands.

Within your state and also include those that border it. I can be in NC in 30 minutes, Georgia in 2 hours. To get to Charleston, SC would take about 4 hours.

When I use that term in my own home, it would be the dozen or so places I can reach in 15 minutes. Not everyone has that luxury. Also, what if local also means lesser ? I'd advise you to hop on a plane to Germany or Belgium before I'd tell you to support a lesser product just because it's local.
I think the phrase came about in the era of import = good, which has only just recently started to erode a little bit. People were drinking old skunky imports and thinking that was what good was supposed to be. Plus, for every Fuller's, Rochefort, or Augustiner there's a Corona or Foster's.

I guess for me 100 miles seems like a fair definition of "local". However, without intending to, I apply this radius only within state lines. For example Dogfish Head is less that 100 miles away and I don't consider it local, yet a brewery that is outside Harrisburg (more than 100 miles away) is in my mind "local". I don't think it should be the case but that's how I "automatically" perceive it in my mind.

Drink local to me is a "hipster" concept that pushes you to believe you aren't a real advocate for your beer scene unless you drink the beer, promote it to friends, blah blah blah...however people never put into prospective that sometimes our local beer SUCKS. I won't blindly support the concept of drink local unless the breweries deserves my money and support. There are always growing pains but sometimes they are just riding the local support and if we don't show them that we expect more, they will never demand more of themselves either.

Perfect example of this, Washington DC...."3 Stars" is one of the worst breweries I have ever tasted and they are booming because people are riding the "drink local" bus off the the bridge.

    Ok, I am done

Drink Local is an ad campaign to deter you from buying beers that are nationally distributed.

Local is a brewery that I can hit after work for a growler-fill or some cans on the way back home without making me late for dinner.

So I guess for me it's:

    Burlington Beer Company
    Four Quarters
    Queen City
    Zero Gravity
    Switchback
Magic Hat (yes #9 straight from the teat is glorious)

If the brewer hasn't got six fingers he's not local to me.
