Just wondering what actual DelMarVa people think of the breweries in the area. I come to the DelMarVa area a few times a year and tonight was my first time at Mispillion but I actually rank it in my top 3 with Burley oak and eVo being the 1st and 2nd (I don't count dogfish head in this list because I see that as an OG staple that is just a mandatory stop whether at Rehoboth or Milton). Any other thoughts on the breweries in the area since I obviously don't get to hit these up more than two or three times a year at best.
@gillagorilla or @joetouchton wondering your thoughts?

A new one opening sometime in 2015 will be Warlock in Smyrna. I think they hope to start pouring for tastings in the spring with full opening next fall. I agree with your list other than I would switch 2 and 3.

Well I won't get to check out eVo again until Wednesday so just going on past evo experience but I was really really impressed by mispillion tonight.

This being said after I went to Burley Oak, Tall Tales and 3rd wave Saturday...plus I've been to backshore (Shorebilly) and lazy lizard in the recent past. I also do like 16 mile which I'd probably rank 4th or 5th depending ....tho never been to old dominion /Fordham but enjoy some of their offerings. I do like Agrilla though only been there once.

I have heard nothing but bad about OC too. And after they reposted that crap about all the horrible ingredients in popular beers I wrote them off. I would like to hit 16 mile sometime. Usually after Misspillion and DFH my wife is driving and I know better than to ask for a third stop.

I live close to Argilla and had bad service there twice. The couple I have tried didn't make me want to fight that. I would hit up Stewart's in Bear. Every time I have been there they have had some decent beers and something on cask.

I've only been Burley Oak, Mispillion and DFH.

I love Burley Oak, especially now that they have a shuffleboard. Any establishment that has a shuffleboard, is aces in my book. I only make it out there to pick up my bottles.

Mispillion is a nice little place, that is off by itself. Great deal to sample everything. I don't really have anything bad to say about them. The 100 bottle series is expensive, but that's to be expected. It is a bit out of the way for me, unless I plan on doing the circular route to hit up State Line. I actually visited them because of the Brew Dogs DE episode.

    DFH
seems to be going downhill, at least tour-wise. The tasting/shop room that used to be combined has completely been renovated. It now has tables and is just a tasting room, with the ability to buy pints (I believe). Now, they blew out the right-side to fit in a brand new shop, which is quite spacious compared to the combination of tasting/shop room that it was before. However, it also seems that since they've gotten rid of the ticketing system, that it is busier than ever. They have a PA system in those 2 rooms, and it sounded like a game of The Price is Right was going on. I told the cashier that it was quite busy, especially compared to when I was there about a year ago. She told me that it was actually one of the slower days. I would hate to see how it is when it is really busy. Also, the bocce ball has been moved to right in front of the brewery.

I've been into the tasting room at eVo, before it was about to close, but have never been on the tour or anywhere else in the building.

I haven't been to any of the other breweries in the area, but I've never heard good things about:

Tall Tales, 3rd Wave, 16 Mile, Backshore (Shorebilly)

    Never heard of:

Lazy Lizard, Old Dominion /Fordham, Twin Lakes or Agrilla

p.s. I really need to hit up one of the Iron Hill spots.

My opinion: the brewers in OC are trying to cash in on the growth of craft. I attended a beer festival this fall featuring most of the local breweries from lower Delaware and Maryland's Eastern Shore. EVO and Burley Oak were great. Fin City and 16 Mile were ok. 3rd Wave is trying hard but are not there yet. Tall Tales( less than a mile from my house, waited anxiously for them to open) and all the OC breweries were awful. I omitted DFH because they are hit or miss for me.

@tommyguz nice post, I keep forgetting to suggest Stewart's when we meet up around those parts- I think we thought about it in the past but didn't pull the trigger... I actually thought of it as we were driving home the other day :slight_frown:

EDIT: I'm interested in visiting DuClaw's locations at some point. Did enjoy Burley Oak though for sure!

Mispillion is probably my favorite right now in Delaware. Great beer and an awesome deal to try them all at the tap from. I haven't been to burley oak yet but enjoy the beer. You arnt missing much from Fordham dominion the tour isn't bad for $5 and a free pint glass. They don't often have anything to taste that you can't buy else where and last time I was there the tour guide was overly drunk. I do enjoy some of their beers though. Warlock in Smyrna is started by Ron price who has been home brewing for a long time and has been AHA judge I believe. It seems really promising.

I forgot about Stewart's. The wife and I have been there once or twice I think. I actually did enjoy it. It was a few years ago but I remember liking it, I just always forget about it too! Maybe next time around we can hit that up.

For some reason I thought you would have hit up a few more of these, but maybe I am wrong in thinking what side of MD you are on...? But nice insight on the ones you've been to!

Yeah. I feel like 3rd wave is trying and I have had some good offerings from them. My sister and brother in law love the place. I did have one bad experience from them a little while ago (maybe a year or so) where we were the only 5 people in the place and were trying to engage the bartender and they were just either busy or off (I think it was one of the owners) and weren't really engaging, but otherwise I feel like their place is a cool place, the beer ranges from mediocre to good to even one or two that are pretty good. They aren't quite on par with Burley Oak, eVo, Mispillion, ...but probably could be a toss up with them or 16 mile.

I wouldn't call myself a Delmarva person per se, but have spent a huge amount of time there.

Always dig Dogfish when I visit as I have been for several years. Hearing actually the lodge up in Lewes is kind of fun and Sam often drops by.

Bottles also in the area that make it to my way once in awhile which I enjoy also are eVo and Burley Oak isn't too bad. Not too crazy about 16 mile

Yeah, I think you're quite mistaken there. I'm in Baltimore, not on the Eastern Shore. ~3 hours from Burley Oak.

I live in Northern VA, but have a place in DE. My top is Burley Oak, not even close, then I'll go with DFH. I've been a 16 Mile fan since they opened, sure, they don't make the most exciting beer, but they stick to their core, bold session ales, philosphy and do a good job of it, also they are (like most brewery people) really good people and their newish tasting room is very nice. I've been to Misspillion once, they are good and hopefully see more of them. Have had a few 3rd Wave and enjoyed them. Evo is excellent of course.

The only OC brewery I've been to is Ocean City Brewing Company, and frankly, based on their quality, plus investment made into their place, I really don't see how they will last. When I was there only one of their fermentation tanks had any beer in it, they had 7 dry tanks and were just going through a brewer change. Their pale ale Rt. 50 was tasty though.

I'm sort of an Evolution homer, so I think they are probably the best thing in the area. I need to try more Burley Oak stuff, but I've liked the beers I've tried so far. Unfortunately haven't had any of their hoppy beers yet.

I haven't heard a good thing about OC Brewing or Backshore, so they aren't exactly on my list of places to visit any time soon. The only Tall Tales beer I've had was their Irish Red, which was just not a good beer.

When RAR (Realerevival) in Cambridge opened, I wanted to hate it (mostly due to the idiotic name). But I have to say, Nanticoke Nectar is a pretty damn good beer. I'm not that impressed with the Bucktown Brown, but at least they seem to know how to make a hoppy beer.
