Hey guys, in late February a small group of us are doing a skiing trip to Breckenridge with a quick one night stay in Denver for the guys flying in from East Coast. Any recommendations on good beers spot to pick up package in Breckenridge? Thanks!
They don't package, but Broken Compass in Breck has a cozy taproom and is making really solid beer. You could grab growlers though.
Thanks for the recommendation. It looks like its just north of the Distillery so thats even better in terms of location.
I'm going to sound like a broken record if you read my other posts, but here goes: Breweries: Favorite is Broken Compass, it's quickly become the best spot for beer. Don't miss the coconut porter. Second favorite is Dillon Dam in Dillon, it's about 20 minute drive from Breck but the food is good and the beer is great. Bakers Brewery in Silverthorne and Backcountry Brewery in Frisco can have some great beers, but sometimes lack consistency. Breckenridge brewery: IMO the food is pretty good but the beers are just average in my opinion. Bottle shops: City Liquors in Breckenridge is pretty decent, it's next to City Market which is the cheapest / only real place to buy groceries in Breck. Selection and prices are not bad. Base Camp in Frisco is kind of a specialty / small batch place that occasionally has Casey beers for sale. Worth looking. FWIW employees at Broken compass have been hinting that Coconut porter may soon be bottled for brewery-only sales. But this person also claimed that Breckenridge pays them not to distribute outside the city limits.
Thanks for all the awesome info, @Dan_K, I'm heading up there in a couple weeks and this info is essential. Any suggestions on good food and bars?
Apres is one of my favorite places to go: http://www.apreslibations.com/craft-beer And this place recently upped their game: http://www.yelp.com/biz/oscars-of-breckenridge-breckenridge I can't find a menu online, but if you look at some of the pictures on Yelp you can see they have 20+ taps and a good selection.
I can't comment on bars in Breck but.. we've eaten a few places. Ember is very good, more on the gourmet side, quiet, pretty expensive. Relish I think I like just a bit more, also expensive, usually has a Broken Compass beer on tap. I thought Kenosha Steakhouse has good food, a little cheaper than the first 2 options here. Crepes a la Cart is great, but sometimes the line is too long Empire Burger is great, prices are a little high but it's Breckenridge. Sevens is kind of unique, great location and a little pricey but not horrible. It's adjacent to the Peak 7 lifts.
Man this is great. Thank you guys for taking the time to make some recommendations. I was looking forward to the trip before but now that i have some ironclad recommendations, I am REALLY looking forward to the trip. I dont really ski so I picture myself drinking while the others are on the mountain. Cheers!!
Go snowmobiling or snowshoeing or something. I would take advantage of the mountains while you are out here.
If you are in decent shape but don't ski, consider renting snowshoes. You should be able to find nice places to snowshoe like Cucumber gulch. You can also ride the (free) Gondola in town, and there are generally events you can go to. The river walk area is very nice. Pools and hot tubs of course. I think some places are also doing snowmobile tours, or sleigh rides. You can also ride the lifts as a non-skier I believe and this would allow you to go to the upper restaurants and eat lunch with your friends and get a chance to see all the ski terrain and views up close. Also be aware that altitude can make you more of a lightweight. Breck town is 9600' and the base of the lower lifts are 9,800-10,000'
Yeah I already made the point about elevation to my buddies because a few of them are already lightweights and I dont want them getting caught up in atmosphere/moment and getting trashed. Also thank you for the tidbit about snowshoes. I will definitely look into them.
Just curious, is City Liquors still considered the best bottleshop in Breck to hit? Curious if anything new has popped up since the last post in this thread, I'm in town this week.
that's Base Camp, and I like it too. In Breck I personally like Skee Vue and The Liquor Shed best but City Liquor is bigger than either.
I did just that! Had glasses of 2lb Tent and In the Steep...both good, but the citra bomb that is ITS was killer. Grabbed a growler of that and hit the road. In Boulder for the night, any bottleshops here worth visiting?
