    Just announced via email:

"We will be holding the 2012 edition of this popular event on Oct. 12, while the Great American Beer Festival is taking place. All About Beer Magazine is our partner for this event, featuring rare, exotic and vintage beers from 32 of America’s finest breweries. Tickets are $100 and go on sale June 17 at Noon (ET). Guests receive the chance to sample some truly amazing beers and meet the people who brew them. Each ticket holders receive a commemorative tasting glass, program, t-shirt and buffet lunch. Once again this year we will feature a silent auction with interesting beer related experiences and collectables (sic) up for bid. The link to purchase tickets will be posted shortly at www.pintsforprostates.org."

Awesome event. Don't know if I have $100 for it, though. I'm all for charity, but at some point economics come into play for me.

$100...yikes. No chance of a beer list before the tickets go on sale either.

I have to say their list should be closer to 2010 than to 2011 if they expect to have people drop $100 on it this year. Anyone can brew a one-off for the rare beer tasting, what makes it exceptional IMHO is having rare beers that have a reputation for being great. Or at least a mix of them thrown in with the one-offs. But hey, they've sold out every year, so, supply & demand I guess.

I'm sure a lot of it is meeting the brewer's, the silent-auction for awesome swag, and knowing the money is going to a great cause.

Domingo, how do you sign up to volunteer? Maybe put a plug in to get all BA's on the volunteer list for this year?

I saw nothing on those previous lists that warrant $100 IMO. If every one boycotts it i think they will get the point of $100 is ridiculous.. BUt that wont happen. It will sell out and next year $120

Glass, t-shirt, buffet, beer, good times... I could think of worse ways to spend $100.

Unfortunately, this event seems to be getting away from it's core audience. Craft beer is pushed along by people who love good beer, and most of these people are not rich. They'd be more than willing to shell out $100 to taste some rare beer and support a charity. The problem is that they, most likely, cannot afford it (add hotel and meals).
This is a disconnect between the organizers and craft beer lovers.

To me, it seems that this event used to be a craft beer event AND a fundraiser. Now, it seems it's a fundraiser (aimed at the more wealthy) that uses craft beer as a lure. Why not make it a wine fest? It's becoming more and more exclusive and "uptight". Silent auction=means more money.

Maybe Wynkoop is charging more for the room
Maybe the brewers cannot absorb the cost of travel (during GABF week, though, is a stretch)

I'm not sure of the details behind the price increase--but I doubt I will go. I can't afford it. Another craft beer lover (advocate and supporter) excluded. It should be called "Beer Fest for Rare People" :sunglasses:
With GABF prices increasing, now this, I fear the gap between producers/promoter and supporter/customers is increasing. Any more of this and a back lash could occur. GABF will see more and more frat boys than beer lovers, because beer lovers spend money on good beer the whole year, instead of one (or two) events. :slight_frown:

    I couldn't agree more.

Just one note, costs are almost always donated by the host providing the space or brewery providing the beer. If they can't afford to donate 100%, then don't donate. Knowing nearly all breweries are growing by double-digits, it's not likely the case that they can't afford it. There really shouldn't be any added cost for a fundraiser unless you factor in inflation (3.4% last time I checked, not 25%). I cannot imagine any costs associated with this event except for the stuff they make custom for the event like the glassware & t-shirt.

I disagree slightly about GABF, there's not many events, even in CO, where you get to try breweries from all-over-the-country. For me it's the one event I can pay and try a bunch of stuff for a fraction of the cost of trading or travelling for beer.

e.g. $70 for Brew at the Zoo where it's all CO breweries? Pass. (another fundraiser)

I don't think $100 is out of line. The past two years lineup's have been solid. People paid $50 for Sourfest. I'm sure most of you bought Firestone Walker XV, BA Yeti, BA Old Ruffian, Cantillon 750s when they come around or any other $20+ beers.
Its a charity event, raising money for a serious issue. You get some stuff to take home, get to try a ton of rare/one off beers and in all honesty it beats the shit show that is GABF.

Unfortunately for me, its the busiest week of the year at work so i miss any and all events but if i could i would not spend $100 on 6 beers from now/then and pick up a ticket.

Actually, I didn't buy any of those $20+ beers, but still can't afford it  But I know what you're getting at. Except that you're asking to sacrifice local support in order to buy one ticket. IF I go to this, then I won't be able to go to...say....Freshcraft  (and I can drink BA Yeti with a chum, buddy, wife, hooker....) Again, some people will be able to...they are richer than I (and probably most other geeks). It just seems that this is going beyond a "fundraiser". Hope I'm wrong

Ah, isn't that precious...and self defeating.

I think my concerns are quite valid and shared. The craft beer industry prides itself with (and strives because of) a sense of community. This event, as well as the GABF, are getting away from that. This "community" is being pounced upon in order to get its share of the pie that is worked so hard to establish. BMC are doing they're share of attacking. Diageo is, too. Heineken bought James Bond for crying out loud! It's easy to see craft brewing as a business and forget what it means to consumers and brewers. If the bottom line is trying to squeeze as much $$ out of the craft beer community as possible, then there won't be a community left.

I sincerely apologize for not making enough money, almost dying (twice) while pursuing my career--that gets me more money, and for promoting craft beer wherever and whenever I can in this country and others. But if all of that is enough to get you to contribute 1 message to this site, then I guess it's worth it.

You spend a lot of time on BA complaining about how you can't afford this, and I won't go to that because it cost to much. I'm truly sorry about your financial situation, but you complained on the AC Golden sour thread about bottle prices, then bitched about GABF price increases. Now guess what! Your complaining about Rare Beer Fest pricing, imagine that.
Please quit complaining so often in your 334 post!!!
