Des Moines area bottle shops

    I'm heading out to the Des Moines area next week for the Knoxville Nationals, and I'd like to hit a bottle shop or 2 while I'm there. Any help you folks could provide would be appreciated!

    Knoxville is about an hour+ from Des Moines.

    The best and closest shop in Des Moines from Knoxville would definitely be the Pleasant Hill HyVee. Here is a list of some of what they currently have in store http://www.beermenus.com/places/9557-pleasant-hill-hy-vee-wine-and-spirits

    Looks like the list was updated yesterday, but it is certainly not everything they have in the store either.

    Thanks a lot! I'm actually staying out by the airport. I've been out there 2x for this event, but I wasn't as into beer as I am now (much to my wife's chagrin!). I'll be all over Des Moines during my stay as we have several places that have become tradition for us to hit while we are there.

    Ahhh....if you are staying by the airport, then the Fleur HyVee is your best bet. It's like a block from the airport. Just as good of a selection as the Pleasant Hill HyVee (unfortunately, they don't have a beermenus listing). I know they just got Black Betty Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout from Nebraska Brewing Co. in recently.

    Let me know if you want restaurant suggestions or anything as well.

    As far as I know, Black Betty is still aged in Stranahan's Whiskey barrels not spent bourbon barrels :slight_smile:

    It's stellar. I know the PHill HyVee had plenty when I was there last Friday. 6 packs of Prairie Standard as well...which is a great beer too. They are always getting new stuff in too, so they may have more Prairie in next week.

    Also...those Upright 750ml bottles are all awesome Saisons from Oregon! There is also a lot of Boulevard stuff at PHill not listed on BeerMenus....like Terra Incognita, Saison Brett, Coffee Ale and Grain Storm.

    +1 on the Fluer HY Vee they have a good selection it always takes me atleast 20 minutes to pick out something there. ( so many tasty options! ) Avoid the other south side HY Vees there full of nothing but BMC and malt liquor!

    Thanks for all the help, guys. Between the 2 Hy Vee's, I was able to find what I was looking for plus pick up a couple of wants. Big win!

    Prairie standard and hop, evil twin imperial biscotti, 3f Oude geuze, even more Jesus, anchorage darkest hour, August schell's star of the north, and ethos ipa (love the cans). I wish TG was currently distributing.

    The HyVee by Valley West Mall has a whole shelf of w00t stout. Stopped in to pick up some dinner and was really surprised that they had so much.

    Check out the cheese shop of Des Moines. They have a small, but pretty good selection of craft beer and a decent, small cellar. I snagged a bottle of KBS and bcbs from them. Even better, Brett (the cheesemonger) and C.J. (the owner) love craft beer. I met Brett; he's really cool and loves to talk beer. Cheers!
