My wife is going to be in the Des Moines area, around mid-September. I've given her a short list, as she's flying back, of things to look for (Crooked Stave, Topling Goliath, Prairie). Is there a solid shop in the area she can hit up to avoid making multiple outings for me? Anything local coming out around that time I should maybe have her look for as well? Appreciate all the help!
Different shops have different strongsuits but some of the best ones: Hy-Vee Pleasasnt Hill Hy-Vee Fleur Hy-Vee Prairie Trail (this one's in Ankeny but well worth a trip) The Cheese Shop Those are the big ones for me. Wine Styles can be useful for some older bottles. Cyclone Liquors is nice in Ames. We haven't really gotten many Crooked Stave drops. Just a couple as far as I know but Abu Nawas is always bringing awesome stuff in.
Great, thanks! I'd heard of Wine Styles in another post. I'll suggest those Hy-Vee locations to her, and suggest the one in Ankeny if she has the time.
The HyVee on Fluer is just a few blocks south of the Airport and they always have a few gems in their selection.
I agree on the shops listed but just so you know, you're chances of just walking into any store and picking up Toppling Goliath is rare. The only one I see on the shelf for more than 20 minutes is Dorthy.
Go to the Fluer HyVee near the airport and ask for Ryan. He is awesome. Tell her to tell him that she is from out of town and wants to bring back some gems for her husband, he will walk back into his back room and come out with some killer stuff.
It's 4 blocks north of the airport. Not trying to be a dick, just don't want someone from out of town to end up in a trailer park.
Whoops that's right it is north! That's my bad and there is no excuse as I live on the south side and vist this HY Vee at least 3 times a week.
