Yup, you are correct. I checked their website, it says their release party for Abyss is November 14th.

I believe you confusing Abyss with their Black Butte anniversary beers. Abyss is a fixed recipe, the only thing that really changes year to year is the percentage of the bottle of beer that gets to sit in the barrel. Black Butte anniversary changes year to year.

I'm not confusing them. Some years abyss has listed just licorice and molasses. Other years the ingredients also included vanilla and cherry bark.

moderator edit: changed park to bark

Is there any chance that I'll be able to find a bottle or two in San Diego during the first week of January? I'm not sure how long it lasts on shelves out there. I once found a bunch of bottles in San Francisco in January but that was in 2010.

There isn't a chance of you finding it the day after it shows up in a given store, unless we are talking about Mesa Liquor where it would be priced at $40 a bottle.

And yet it will be sitting on shelves in Bend through next summer. The mysteries of distribution...

I got a few bottles of it last year a couple days after it came out. I didn't like either 2011 or 2012 though, so I'm probably not going to race to the store this year unless I trapped on the hype train.

Like HeavySpeedway mentioned, chances are very unlikely.

Abyss's "bottleshop window" or "BSW" (that's right, I'm creating a new acronym for us geeks) is 0-24 hours. I remember Abyss's BSW back in 2010 was about 1-2 months as it just sat there in BevMo's shelves. It has been 3 years since then and with the rise of craft beer population, the decrease in it's BSW is not surprising.

Oh well, thanks for the feedback. I should be able to get some pretty easily but was hoping to just pick it up in shop while I was out there.

I remember seeing '10 abyss sitting on shelves of wholefoods back in July 2011. Nowadays? Good luck!

Unfortunately it's like that with most limited releases now. I used to be able to pick up KBS weeks after the release. Now you have to be on a list or chase a truck around to find any. Some stores are putting limits on beers that aren't even that rare. For example, a local bottle shop was limiting regular Breakfast Stout to two per person and other stores are holding wide releases like Mad Elf behind the counter and only allowing you to buy a six pack.

Sweet feathery Jesus. Last year (when I still lived there) you could just roll up into any Wegmans or most distributors and get those beers, no problem.

I'll probably just get Abyss on tap this year. I had it at Toronado SF last December. Does anyone know/remember how long they had it for?

I was still able to find 2010 Abyss on the shelf up until this time last year in San Diego. I didn't even try to get a bottle of last year's release because I didn't want to deal with the hassle of a list or truck-chasing.

I think they only listed the extra ingredients due to having to comply with labeling requirements. From what I remember reading, Abyss has always had those ingredients.
