The bottle shop part is what was confusing me, I was lumping them in with the distributors. I actually just got in from Bella Vista and the tax was in fact 8%.

Back on track though - OP I saw Black Butte cases there for close to $50, which seems in line with the $12/sixer price point you mentioned above. BV can be a little pricier on some items though.

Generally items they don't distribute but they have gotten a little better over the years.

Also, I forgot reason 4. Bottle shops in Philly proper don't have any real competition except with themselves. Since most aren't close to each other, it means they can charge quite a bit more.

I would have zero problem paying those prices for Deschutes.

    Suburbs are much cheaper.

But on that note, I find Deschutes way overrated.

Inversion IPA was a six pack drain pour (with a best buy date 3 months ahead).

Black Butte was good, but not up to the standards of many porters we already got.

Fresh Squeezed IPA was very good.

Mirror Pond is not something I would regularly buy. Too many other enjoyable Pale Ales.

Overall, I just don't get it.

This is one reason I'm glad I'm not living in the city anymore... I used to live by Ultimo/Brew, and while it's a nice place and has a great selection, etc., the prices on some of the harder to get brews were insane. The last time I was there they STILL had at least 5 or 6 bottles of Bolt Cutter left (this was maybe 2 months ago), $34 per. And they wonder why they aren't selling. I always found it odd that in such a craft-centric city, we would have such few bottle shops.

I've only seen Chainbreaker and Fresh Squeezed out my way in the burbs so far, the FS was about $8 for a bomber and I think the CB was around $10-11 a sixer. I don't really get all the hype either, I mean Fresh Squeezed and Black Butte are good beers, but nothing I would buy regularly. Although the BB XXV was quite tasty.

Yeah, when other cities saw Bolt Cutter for way less than that, it's just insulting.
