I think that Inversion is a very under-rated beer. Always crisp and clean, and at good prices. Mirror Pond is the definition of a Pale Ale for me, it's not just another IPA under a different name. The Black Butte Anniversary beers are fantastic, even better than The Abyss, IMHO. Deschutes does very little wrong from where I sit.

Yes I do wish they would do different stouts and porters, on that note what they do they do well so why change.
(They are my all time favorite also)!!

I wouldn't complain if they expanded their BA program but I don't think I could be happier with Deschutes as they are now. Their barrel-aging program is already held in high esteem (Mirror Mirror, Abyss, Dissident...), and Red Chair, Black Butte, and Obsidian are among my favorites in their styles and almost criminally affordable for $8/6-pack, or $24/case at Costco. They seem to have all bases covered.

Deschutes should hit Wisconsin next week
Not sure if they're sending anything above and beyond their regular lineup. But if they are, it's Hop in the Dark season.

After thinking about this for a bit, I don't know what you mean by "step up". Do more volume? Different types of barrels? More styles in barrels?

Really enjoy their beers...good to amazing. Fresh Squeezed IPA is my current favorite
from them and also stocking my frig with it pretty regularly.

Just grabbed a 750ml of Mirror Mirror, their barley wine and can't wait until next mid-Winter
or early Spring of 2015 to crack it open.

Thanks for the props. We have always used barrel aging to be part of the flavor profile, not THE flavor profile. We are looking for ultimate complexity in these special beers. We are never sure of the final blend until we taste the beer. The blend beer is beer brewed fresh that is blended with the beer aged in barrels. We like doing it this way because we like the overall beer better than if it had that overwhelming wine or bourbon flavor. With that being said we also produce beers that are 100% barrel aged (The Dissident, Planete Rouge, etc.) However, for something new, look for Single Barrel Abyss, limited production bottles coming soon from individual barrels like Bourbon, Cognac, Wine, Sherry, etc. for those looking for that very special experience.
    Cheers,
    Gary

Tyranena also does some great partial barrel-aging.

This is what I came to say. If he isn't too busy having fun in Belgium maybe @TheJermis will speak to the benefits of "partial" barrel aging.

    If so, thanks in advance!

They're arriving next week. Deschutes' also hoping to send some Black Butte XXVI when that launches

I'm quite happy with them 'simply' being the quintessential PNW brewery- I just wish they'd get to the NYC area already :slight_frown:.

Behind? Because they don't use barrel aging (which is obviously the pinnacle of modern brewing ) as extensively as the others? I highly doubt that Deschutes is trying to keep up with those other "major west coast" breweries you listed.

Deschutes is a great brewery. That being said Green Monster was a disaster and the first installment of Stoic was very sub par (Not the Stoic is great).

I think they need to get a new year round IPA. Inversion IPA is boring and Fresh Squeezed IPA (now in 6pks) is nothing like the original batch.

Black Butte is one of my favorite porters and Obsidian is great as well.

Inversion IPA is a perfect daily IPA.
