The Enlightened Despot is an amazingly rich, complex and surprisingly drinkable Bourbon Barrel Russian Imperial Stout. Notes of chocolate, vanilla, and of course the delicious hints of Bourbon round out this robust stout. The 2016 version was aged for 9 months in Kentucky Bourbon Barrels. Made with 10 specialty grains and containing over 78 IBU of American Hop flavor, this truly is a one of a kind beer.

Beer Advocate rates the Enlightened Despot a 94 saying, “The beer geeks love their Imperial Stouts, and a small handful garner enough hype to draw massive crowds around their release. This one is just as deserving as the next. A sweet malt bomb with roasted grain and alcohol is not all that is going on here; there’s also layers of chocolate and coffee met by alcohol warmth. Something to savor.”

I can't wait till this brewery hits the mark. All the Despots are a little underwhelming to me. No real variant ever pops out of the beer. Great labels though for whenever they turn their stouts into something I can remember. There non-stout offerings are solid though.

Agreed. I have been disappointed by quite a few of their variants. The Decadence beers were just not good. Also seem like VA breweries are stuck in the common theme of either chocolate, vanilla or coffee as the go-to variant flavors. Their Coconut Delight was amazing however and that flavor seems to be winning appeal when breweries use it (Coco Resolute / Coconut & Vanilla Concealed Darkness) Just waiting for something new to blow my mind and which brewery will do it. Not targeting one brewery but my though is if a brewery has a history of just not hitting the mark on favors then stick to barrel aged variants. It may be boring to some but I dig a great BA version. Throw some flavors in a pin and if it is received highly then consider bottles the following year. I understand for their Supreme Leader release, which was one of my top beers of 2015, LCCB will also release bottles called Great Commander and Eternal President. I think one is a Rum Barrel version of Heir Apparent. Hoping the other is also another barrel aged version.

This is just my opinion but I feel that is because of how much they hop their stouts. The bitterness just drowns everything else out. I had Despot on tap in November so a good 8 months laster and it was still very hoppy.

That being said I will still be going to try them on draft and because it is always a good time at LCCB.

THIS. They hop their stouts to the extreme, and they are just too bitter. That said, they do seem to smooth out a bit with time. I will solely be getting a ticket for the Hide the Despot (which I'm nearly certain is PVW23 barrels, as I know they were able to secure some last year based on their family's relationship with the Van Winkles). That beer should be pretty stellar with time, when the hops fade. Regular Despot and the other two variants were just okay for me, but I know a lot of people who really enjoy Despot.

I'm one of the ones who really enjoys Despot, I like the bitter stout. Most big imperial stouts are too sweet for my tastes, Despot really hits the mark for me.

Got a ticket for Group B. Will be making the trek down from PA. Was gifted a bottle of 2015 last year from a great BA, and never got to drink it as it ended up being a want of a BIF target... glad I'll get the opportunity to try this this year!

Looked like Group C was available for about 7 minutes, but A and B sold out very fast

Glad they are doing it this way. I didn't attend last year but had a buddy who went and missed out.
    Looking forward to going.

Got my Group A ticket, but I'm sad my friend who planned on going with me didn't.

He was just about to check out, then BOOM! Jilted at the altar.

I've gotta find a way to make things up for him

Can anyone who was there last year comment on the price per bottle? Just want to get an idea of what I'm in for.

$18 for regular, $20 for Vanilla and Coffee, $30 for Rare Barrel. This is posted on the event page, no need to go back to last year.

To piggyback on @beernuts post they do not include tax like most places. Add 5%. $18.90 for regular, $21 for Vanilla and Coffee, $31.50 for Rare Barrel.
