Heading to Ferndale for Schramm's Mead Day this weekend. Any suggestions for craft beer bottle shops or breweries to stop at in the area? Thanks
Holiday Market in Royal Oak. Pretty good selection of craft, plus a small growler fill station with rotating taps. Which offers 12oz, 16oz, 32oz & 64oz fills. Also in the area is Roak brewery and Hop Cat (bar) which has a crazy selection of craft in tap. Other local bottle shops worth a visit are 9 & Hilton Liquor, Paradise Liquor. Pretty solid craft selection. Prices vary.
For breweries, Dragonmead and Kuhnhenn in nearby Warren both are solid. Griffin Claw in nearby Birmingham is up-and-down but in a hip area and worth a visit. I've heard good things about Roak in Royal Oak, though I've never been. Are you up for heading into Detroit proper? If so, I'd recommend Founders, Jolly Pumpkin, Batch, and Eastern Market, in that order. For the record, I was underwhelmed by Schramm's on a recent visit. Too many flavored meads; not enough honey focus for my tastes (similar could be said for a lot of breweries these days in fairness). Also for the record, I'm not a local, just a frequent visitor (for work, but Detroit and its northern suburbs are hopping).
The best beer store nearby is Holiday Market in Royal Oak. But 8 Degrees Plato in Detroit is worth a visit - they've got 15 taps and a nice selection. If you go to Off The Wagon in Clawson you can pick up bottles of Speciation, which IMO is making the best sours in Michigan. Off The Wagon is one of the only places you'll find 10ish different options. Eastern Market Brewing (Detroit - Eastern Market/Downtown; newish, small selection but solid and in a cool part of town), Batch (Detroit - Corktown; wide variety in a cool neighborhood), Jolly Pumpkin (Detroit - Midtown; huge array of sours, good good) and Urbanrest (Ferndale) are all worth checking out in the area. The Founders tap room in Detroit is cool too, it's right by 8 Degrees Plato and a short drive from there to Eastern Market, Batch, and Jolly Pumpkin If you've got the 40 minutes to drive, though, you should go to Ann Arbor and go to HOMES, far and away the best brewery in the area for IPAs.
I was up here on the nE side of Detroit just for a couple days. Had 2 full very long (double shift) days. Leave tomorrow, heading back to Cinci. Called a couple places with no luck for boss tweed. Will call some of the ones mentioned here. Any liquor stores in town that keep nice bottles around at very high prices (way higher than retail, closer to or at secondary)? Usually look for a nice bottle for my father while traveling.
Fresh Tweed just started hitting shelves in the last week. Try Meijer for the best prices for Old Nation if near by.
and check the dates .... at least in my part of town there is a fair amount of 'old" tweed sitting around.
Unfortunately I missed out. We got gone late, and I only had time for one stop. Needed to make it Whole Foods to get my wife some Jam. It’s a tradition for me to bring back local jam. They did not have any .
I checked out the newly opened Brewery Faisan in Detroit last week, and I was very impressed. The Belgian Pale Ale and Dubbel were rusticly quite good and the IPA was great (classic yet modern and, unlike most IPAs these days, not dumbed down with high residual sugar and low bitterness). I've visited quite a few breweries in their early weeks of operation, and this was one of the most outstanding. There were exactly two other patrons (admittedly on a Tuesday evening), and it doesn't seem to be in a happening part of town, so I don't think people have caught on yet.
+1 to the Holiday Market bottle shop suggestion, as well as Holly Pumpkin and Kuhnhenn brewery suggestions. I haven't had a DRIPA in a while and it bums me out.
