I am going to Detroit next week for work. I will be staying at the Renissance downtown, will have a car and be on an expense account. Any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated. Note reccomendations dont have to be beer related but it is appreciated. I have been to the D before. I will hit up Slows and Roast for sure. Any good bottle shops would be appreciated. I may hit up one eyed bettys and then go to Kunhennen but that seems like a lot in one day. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Holiday Market in Royal Oak (couple miles from OEB)
Champanes in Warren (half a mile from Kuhnhenn)
Merchant's in Dearborn (not too far from downtown)
8 Degrees Plato in Ferndale (down the street from OEB)

I don't have anything to add, just felt oddly compelled to reply to this thread.

If you're an FIB, I'd suggest Clubhouse BFD, not too far from Detroit. Super generous owners - great atmosphere all at a reasonable price. Make sure to ask Jason what you should drink, he'll never steer you wrong.

Are you saying that you have only one day available? You've already got a full plate. What am I missing here?

If you want a good burger, the Mercury Burger Bar across from Slows is fantastic..They also have craft beer on tap...Also, We have a distillery just down the street from slows as well called Two James Distillery..Excellent spirits and drinks...

If your into Mexican Food, there are quite a few Mexican Restaurants in Mexican town that are good...Los Galanes, Mexican Town Rest. are really good..xochimilco is there too, but is more expensive and there is no difference in the food, if not as good as the two I mentioned....(No Craft Beers though)

BTW, Whole Foods downtown has a pretty decent bottle selection...

Midtown grill which just opened is pretty darn good...A few doors down is Great Lakes Coffee..They have craft beer on tap as well as bottles..They usually have a very good selection and you can grab a growler there too...

Traffic Jam & Snug is another very good restaurant..They make and grow everything there..They also make their own beer which is ok......

Also, Coach Insignia on top of the Renny...Great food...Just thought I'd bring that up as a friend is the head chef, ha...

If your going to Kuhnhenn it may be worth your time to stop at dragonmead. They have a few solid beers with final absolution being their best IMO it is one of the best triples in Michigan

I'll throw in a suggestion for a burger from Redcoat on Woodward, and a beer from Griffins Claw. I try to do both most times I'm in town.

All great suggestions everyone. Thanks So much. Another Question. Is there an area in Detroit where there is like a row of abndoned homes/wall where there is amazing graffiti art? I feel that would be something I would want to check out providing its safe...

You could save yourself the trouble and watch virtually any newscast, movie, commercial or documentary having to do with Detroit. They already found the best ruin **** for you.

I think you might be referring to the Heidelberg Project? It's easy to get to from Downtown, just a <10 minute drive up Gratiot. If you google it, the address shows up as 3600 Heidelberg St, Detroit, MI 48207, though it actually takes up that entire block.

As long as you go during the day it should be quite safe - and it'd be difficult to appreciate in the dark anyway.

It won't be dark at night. At the rate it's being burned down he would likely have a fire to light the street. :astonished:

Keep in mind if you head into the neighborhoods, i.e. Heildelberg and ruin ****, that the city services are piss poor in the city and many of these side streets will not be plowed and could be extremely snowy/icy. Be safe.

To keep it beer related I will also chime in to say that Kuhnhenn is a must.

Plus in downtown there is the Grand Trunk, a nice beer bar with lots of Michigan beer on tap. Then over by the stadiums there is the Park Bar. A smaller selection of craft but awesome middle eastern food inside at the Bucharest Grill. Oh killer hot dogs too. For real. Middle Eastern and Hot Dogs.

Last I see no one has mentioned Green Dot Stables. Not too far from downtown or Mexicantown. Funky joint with good beers at great prices and amazing sliders.

Agree, if you're hitting up Slow's then Mercury and Green Dot are a MUST. Too close not to swing into at least for one.

I'd go appetizer crazy - draft and some brisket nachos at Slow's, then draft and some poutine at Mercury, finally draft and a couple of sliders at Green Dot - you won't regret any of those.

Hit up American Coney for a couple coneys.
Also check out Vincentes Cuban Cuisine.
You already have Kuhnhenn on the list but as mentioned before stop in Dragonmead as well and have a Final Absolution.
Stop in Detroit Beer Co and have a Local 1529 IPA and a Detroit Dwarf
Stay away from the "graffiti art". Avoid public transportation at night.
    Stay warm and stay safe.
