Hi BA's, I'll be visiting your area and needed advice on a couple things. Will be in town that Saturday to Tuesday. I've never been to the area, so I don't know the geography too well.

    1. Bottle shops. Most of my weekend will be at the Movement festival so I'd like to hit a bottle shop as soon as possible after the airport. Can you suggest one along the way? I'm staying at the MGM in downtown Detroit. If there's any closeby downtown to recommend, that'd be a plus as well.

    2. Beer bars: At some point, I'm sure I'll want to get indoors and kick back a pint - so where would you suggest drinking near the festival (Renaissance Center/Hart Plaza)? Grand Trunk looked like it was within really close proximity. Any advice on quick places to grab a bite to eat (especially if open late) would be helpful too.

    3. I'm flying in from DFW and will be checking bags... if there's any interest in an IP trade for Jester King, etc, PM me. Would love to get Founders, JP, Bells etc!

    Thanks!

I go to Fairway Sav-Mor in Eastpointe, personally. It's not IN Detroit, but it's about 15-20 minutes north. They'd have any Michigan beer you're looking for, more than likely.

For beer bars, Grand Trunk wouldn't be an awful choice. I haven't been there, but they have a nice selection. Only thing is, they seem to be sort of overpriced. But hey, good location. If you want some food, try Motor City Brewing Works. Their beer isn't that great, but the pizza (Sopla Fuego, if you like spicy food) is fantastic. Additionally, if you like chili dogs, DEFINITELY go to Lafayette Coney Island.

I'd also suggest Green Dot Stables, simply because their food is truly some of the best that I have ever eat. And hey, they have Michigan beers on-tap. They only have four taps though. All drinks are $2-$3, and all food is $3 or less as well. The portions are quite small, but outrageously good.

    Go to Slow's.

If you're going to stay at the MGM, go to TAP as it's right inside of the casino. There are over 50 taps.
Green Dot is great for food and beer, as is the grand trunk. Lafayette Coney Island is open 24 hours for late night food. There are no real bottle shops downtown unless you want some fresh Colt 45. You'll have to hit them with a car. 8 degrees Plato in Ferndale is great, Discount Drinks in Wyandotte is really good too. Then there is the Holiday market Royal Oak.

    Can you get
Gotlandsdricka, Black Metal or Viking Metal From JesterKing? I'd do some trading for those.

I'll second Slows. Great food and tap list. For a bottle shop Holiday Market in Royal Oak is a short drive from downtown and has an awesome selection.

For shopping, Merchant's Fine Wine is only a little out of the way from the airport and has a great selection. There is also a store over in the Eastern Market area that has a good selection of beer, but you might want to be careful of IPA's. As far as beer bars, you can't go wrong with Grand Trunk, Slow's, Green Dot Stables, Jacoby's and TAP at MGM Grand has a decent beer selection. Another vote for Lafayette Coney Island, best coney dog period.

Thing about Slow's is there's an obscenely long wait. Be prepared.

That's why I recommended Motor City Brewing Works (for pizza), Lafayette (for coney dogs), and Green Dot (for insanely good food overall ... and the beer).

Thanks! Merchant's Fine Wine in Dearborn?

Yes to the first two but Viking Metal hasn't hit stores yet; perhaps any day now though? Pretty much entire rest of the lineup is available to me too (other standouts: Funk Metal, Das Uberkind, Das Wunderkind, RU-55). For trades, I'm interested in one-off/limited stuff from JP/Bell's/Founders (ie KBS, the Grande Reserve from JP etc).

If you're in town until Tuesday, go to Slow's on Monday, preferably for lunch. Much shorter wait, but same food and beer.

Thanks for the suggestion! Was actually eyeballing lunch at JP with a friend who lives in Ann Arbor on Monday. Hope they're open...

One more question: anything limited/seasonal that I should be on the lookout for in stores? No limits to the style; just mainly prefer stuff that I wouldn't be able to get in Texas.

Short's has been releasing one or two limited beers a month. Check their site to see what's available in distro while you're here, although anything you could get from them won't be available in TX.

Want to clarify something - are Park Bar and Bucharest Grill the same thing?

Same building...The Schwarmas are actually in Bucharest..you can sit in the park bar and wait for your order or eat it there and enjoy some good beer..

Also, the Mercury Burger Bar right across the street from slows is great..great burger and good beer there to..Also, Michael Symons Roast is a great restaurant (little expensive) with great beer as well

I still say a stop at Green Dot and then drunkenly hopping into Lafayette is pretty much the best night a person can have in Detroit. :grinning:

And I wouldn't say Roast is "little expensive" ... more like LOT expensive. $15 per appetizer and about $30 per course... a Bud Light runs $5 last time I checked.

I mean, I guess you get what you pay for, but.

Anyone that goes to Detroit and is feeling BBQ but not feeling a two hour wait could always head to Red Smoke BBQ in Greektown -- solid BBQ with surprisingly good macaroni and cheese.

I know it's not Arby's cheap, but there are restaurants that are WAY more expensive than Roast that aren't nearly as good.

    Fast food: Inexpensive.
    Applebee's or similar fare: Average.
A place like Slow's: Little expensive.
    Roast: Expensive.
Ridiculous over-the-top $100 per two-bite course: Obscenely expensive.
