Have a friend traveling from Pittsburgh to Detroit and she's wondering the best spots at which to stop along the way, and in Detroit. If I give her a fantastic list, she's promised to play beer mule for me. I did a cursory forum search, but didn't find an existing helpful thread--apologies if this is a redundant request.

She mentioned breweries, but if there's a mega bottle shop just of the highway where she can fill her trunk with 3Floyds, I would probably steer her there as well. It's only a long weekend, so there won't be a bunch of time, and I'm not sure if she's thinking Turnpike or 80, but the routes seem pretty similar, and I can't imagine she's married to either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

She might find some 3 Floyds in OH, it is not distributed in MI.

If she is taking 80 and you have your heart set on 3 Floyds have her stop at The Andersons in Toledo Oh

Thanks; don't really have my heart set on 3F, just want to provide her a few/several solid breweries on her journey, so she can bring some good bottles back to the 'burgh.

Is she going to Detroit proper? or suburbs? That would help in pointing you in the right direction

In all honesty just go to holiday market in ferndale. If they don't get it at this shop, they aren't likely to get it anywhere else in Detroit. Their prices are also fantastic.

The one bad thing is most really limited stuff sells out in a day. Take the 10 or 20 or so cases of kbs that evaporated last night.

Thanks all, but what about breweries along the way? The bottles are more for me, she is interested in breweries.

    Detroit breweries=bust.

My wife says I need to go to Bastone. In my opinion, the best MI has to offer is West of Detroit, much West. If you are passing though Dearborn, Merchants has a huge store and a lot of stuff.

Kuhnhenn in Warren..Griffin Claw in Birmingham are the two best in the area...Royal Oak has Bastone Brewing co...Ferndale has Woodward avenue brewing..Ferndale also has a great beer bar called One eyed bettys (little pricey)..Warren also has 2 more breweries in Dragonmead and Falling Down Beer Co..

Good call. I have suggested their taphouse, which is near Olmsted Falls and not far off 80; the saloon proper would be a greater deviation, but she'd be more interested in the taphose anyway.

If she's in Royal Oak, Schramms is definetly worth a visit.

Kuhnhenn and Dragonmead are probably the two best breweries in the Detroit area (both are in Warren) and only a few miles apart. If your friend wants to visit breweries, Kuhnhenn is the better experience, but Dragonmead offers a greater beer selection. But if buying bottles at these breweries is the goal, it's rare to get any at Kuhnhenn except for special occasions, and whatever Dragonmead puts in bottles is easily found at the good bottle shops.

If you want to have your friend bring back bottles from breweries that don't distro to PA, then have her get stuff from Short's, Brewery Vivant, Dragonmead, and OddSide Ales. Anything from any of those breweries that is a style that you like is a good choice. Check out the link below for the Short's release schedule. The regular menu beers are all okay, but the recent releases of their seasonal and specialty beers have all been very good, although these go quickly from store shelves and may not be found at some good stores. (Generally only the beer bottle shops get the Short's seasonals, but their regular stuff can be found at grocery stores.)

I agree for good bottle selection Holiday Beer Market in Royal Oak, place to go... if you go to Griffin Claw (Birmingham) they also have some bottled beer to bring back and usually about 12 different ones to try on tap. Love Kuhnhenn, but no bottles right now unless you like Mead, Dragonmead is also nice little place, but I'd pick Kuhnhenn over Dragonmead if she only has time to visit one.
