I'm planning a trip to South West England in May, more specifically to Devon and Cornwall. Are their any particular beers/breweries I have to look for? Also hints for must do bars or shops?

Last time I was in Cornwall it was still dominated by St Austell, Sharps and Skinner's in terms of available beer.

I'd definitely recommend a pint of Proper Job from cask, it should be easy to find. Just a very well made hoppy pale ale

If you are in Helston at all, there is the Blue Anchor - I think they have been brewing there for 150 years and it's a very good pub. Drink some Spingo

I was in Falmouth last time I was down and can recommend The 'Front (lots of local beer+cider, most of it is gravity dispense) , Mono (about ten keg lines, some cask) and HAND beer bar

    Other than I can't help much

Harbour are making some decent beers too. Other than that I'm not sure, I haven't been to Cornwall since I was a kid. Beautiful part of the world.

I'll second Harbour, solid beers across a number of styles and some barrel aged numbers to boot.

I'm visiting Devon and Cornwall next month for the first time in 10 - 12 years and am planning on a night in Falmouth so I can visit Harbour's bar there.

I visited Cornwall a couple of summers ago - I'd have a Skinners Betty Stogs. It's everywhere, and pretty decent.
I also had a River Cottage EPA (collab with Skinners) which was pleasant enough.

This is partly lifted off a reply I gave to another post a while ago, hopefully it will be of some use:

The CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2016 is a pretty good place to start, and it also has a list of all known (at the date of publication) UK breweries, listed by county and also described in more detail in the second half of the book. Also, the website

    http://whatpub.com/
is a really useful resource for finding pubs.

Some pubs I would recommend (although by no means an exhaustive list):

    Devon:
Newton Abbot (I used to live there):
Teign Cellars - very good craft beer bar/bottle shop with good food, run by a real beer enthusiast.
Dartmouth - local pub opposite Teign Cellars
    Railway - brewpub
There is also an independent maltings, Tuckers Maltings that has a very good bottle shop and does tours as well. Also, they hosts an excellent beer festival each April.

    Totnes:
Bay Horse - excellent local pub
    Albert - brewpub
Totnes Brewing Company/Barrel House - brewpub

    Widdecombe-in-the-Moor:
Rugglestone Inn - great country pub in the heart of Dartmoor

    Brixham:
Queens Arms - great "back-street boozer"

    Kingswear:
Ship - good local "village" pub

    Dartmouth:
    Cherub Inn - historic pub
    Seven Stars
    Royal Castle Hotel

East Prawle (not very easy to get to):
Pig's Nose - great local village pub

    Malborough:
Royal Oak - another good local village pub

    Salcombe:
    The Victoria
    The Ferry

    Plymouth:
Various pubs, including the Minerva and the Dolphin

    Cornwall:
    Falmouth:
Various pubs/bars, including the excellent Beer Wolf (or is it Beerwolf?)

This website is really useful if you need to use public transport anytime:

As for west country beer/brewery recommendations, here are a few breweries that I tend to like, although again it is by no means an exhaustive list:

Devon:Teignworthy (based in Newton Abbot, in Tuckers Maltings, e.g. Reel Ale, Gun Dog, Old Moggie, Beachcomber; they also brew the "Edwin Tucker" range based on historical recipes)
Exeter (e.g. Darkness, Ferryman, Fraid Not)
Otter (e.g. Amber, Ale, Bright, Bitter)
Bridgetown (based in the Albert brewpub in Totnes)
Hunters (e.g. Half Bore, Full Bore, Royal Hunt, Black Jack)
    Tavy (e.g. Best Bitter, Porter)
Dartmoor (Legend, Jail Ale, normally available on cask at the Dartmouth pub directly opposite Teign Cellars)
    New Lion (e.g. Pandit IPA)
    Quercus (e.g. Shingle Bay)
Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlons, e.g. Port Stout, Dry Stout, Yellowhammer)
    Clearwater
    Bays
Beer Engine (brewpub in Newton St Cyres)
    South Hams (e.g. Eddystone)

    Some other west country ones:
St Austell (e.g. Proper Job, HSD, Big Job (if you can find it!))
    Harbour
    Blue Anchor
    Butcombe
RCH (e.g. Pitchfork, Old Slug Porter, East Street Cream)
    Kubla
    Wild Beer
    Cotleigh
    Milk Street
Bristol Beer Factory (never had a beer from them I didn't like)
    Bath Ales
Moor (specialise in un-fined beers, divides opinion)
    Freeminer
    Arbor

Euroglot, Redrover and Hanglow like this.

There are two bottle shops that I can think of in Cornwall, they are The Beer Cellar in Truro which has some Belgian beers and a fair selection of craft, both local and foreign and there is also Cornwall Beer Slecialist on Cardrew Industrial Estate, near Redruth. They have a bottle shop, with an excellent selection of Belgian beers and some Costal Brewery ales (which are brewed on site) there is also a bar with about 8 taps. If the weathers nice, why not take some bottles to the beach
