It comes down to rarity sadly. Fresh or not, people want whalez bro. If Community released small batches of this, people would be swooning. Due to the fact it's on every shelf from Wal-Mart to Specs and varying dates, beerpeople are going to dismiss it.

Out of curiosity, what would be considered a small batch?

I guess 'small batch' isnt the term I wanted to use, but not sure how to rephrase. Either way, my point is easily made.

    Less readily available?

If there wasn't such a hard on for Velvet Hammer that makes every the other breweries in DFW chase its success then you would have more local IPAs.

I think there is more of a hard on to chase and convert the BMC crowd with pales ales, etc.

My wife and I stopped by there yesterday afternoon. Very cool place and really nice people. Beers were very tasty, I really enjoyed the Galaxy...took home a crowler of it. I haven't quite acquired the taste for sours yet but theirs seemed pretty good. One of the guys there really knew his stuff and schooled me on sour beers.

Actually prior to their first bottling of it the beer was amazing (I think 2010 or 2009). As soon as they started blending it with non-BA WW to get the most bottles into the public it went to shit. I don't think I bought a single bottle last year and I saw it on sale 6 months after release. I'd rather it be harder to get and 100% barrel aged than easy to get and severely mediocre.

Amen. Still saw cases of it sitting on the floor last week and wish they'd make it like they used to.

From what I heard about last year, they didn't do a master blend of the beer, more they filled from barrels that had varying levels of residual liquor and that created bottle variation. Also, there was a huge price hike at retail after years of reasonable pricing. The combination of the two kept me from buying it up and sending it out like I used to.

Yeah the price hike and still blending with regular WW makes me skip this every time from now on. I'd pay $14 a bottle for 100% BA but not what has been put out lately.

Had some 2011 BBAWW at the Rahr 10th anni tour this past weekend and it was pretty damn good. The recent stuff has been lame though.

Maybe your tastes changed? Either way, I wasn't impressed enough with it to get another bottle this year. That Oatmeal Stout they put out later in winter is good, though.

I don't think so. I was drinking 2010s along side 2011 and 2012. 2010 was always great. It has slipped from year to year. Hoping for a rebound in 2014.

Fair enough. I don't think mine have changed all that much from 2009 either - I knew that 07 BCBS was magic, and I still think that. The local Spec's still has the '13 Rahr WW sitting on the shelf for $13. I'd buy another bottle at about $6, I think.

I feel the same. I had it on tap at a couple different places and each time it was different but not as good as the previous year's version. Take into account the huge price hike, the variation, and the quality drop, those in combination just really put a lot of people I spoke with, very off.
