Yesterday morning I slapped my American Ale yeast pack, shook it. Last night it really swelled and about to burst. To avoid it blowing up, I took a tiny pin and put a tiny hole in it to release the pressure. Today it's a little swollen but not like a balloon about to burst. I am thinking that it's will be fine until I pitch the yeast later today. It will have sat for about 18 hours in an active state. Did I do anything wrong?

Yes, you did everything wrong. Follow the instructions printed on the yeast pack.

The Wyeast packs are engineered so that they will not burst. Even if you smack it earlier than you should, it isn't a big deal; the yeast aren't going anywhere. Putting a hole it the package is a bad idea, as you compromise the sterility of the yeast.

That sounds like a vaguely off-color euphemism. Back in my day we called it "slapping' the yeast pack"
